Front of Chaple built in 1873 as seen from Chapel Street

Picture of front of chapel

Picture taken in the Fall showing our 125 year old chapel. The Sayles Memorial Chapel was built in 1873, a memorial erected by William F. and Frederick C. Sayles in memory of Louise Marsh and Nannie Nye (daughters of William) and Benjamin Paris (son of Frederick). The Chapel, built of Westerly granite in Gothic style was erected at a cost of $30,000. In 1877, a tower and steeple were added in memory of another Sayles child who died while a student at Brown University. In 1956, the steeple was removed because of damage caused by Hurricane Carol. In 1982, the remaining tower was removed due to severe structural damage, returning the Chapel to its original facade. The red doors are only used for special occasions, such as weddings, and during the summer.
