St. Bernadette School Philosophy

We believe that each child is a child of God and has been called to a life of faith, hope, and love. Moral values and Christian concepts should be an integral part of the classroom experience which will cultivate and strengthen the student’s mind and heart in an environment surrounded by the presence and practice of the Gospel message.

We believe that St. Bernadette School exists primarily to complement parents in educating their children. We recognize parents as the primary educators, and therefore, we support their teaching and their inculcating in their children a sense of responsibility and accountability.

We believe that each child is a unique personality with individual patterns of growth who needs knowledge and skill to aid in his spiritual, intellectual, social, physical, and emotional growth. We also believe that we must lead the child to gain and use knowledge, with a mind disciplined to think logically, independently and creatively and thus attain the greatest possible development of his or her own potential. Based on these beliefs we commit ourselves to provide the religious and academic climate in which the child shall be instructed in the sciences, skills, habits and appreciative attitudes which will encourage him or her to be a good citizen and a well-informed member of the community.

We believe that the school through the teaching of Christian doctrine, academic skills, and fine arts curriculum should contribute to the child’s greater understanding of himself or herself in relationship to his or her parish, community, nation and world.

In summary, St. Bernadette School has a two-fold purpose:

1.       Religious, to prepare loyal and fully informed Catholics guided by the authority of the church;

2.              Educational, to provide students with an orderly learning atmosphere, and a sense of seriousness about academic achievement.

Mission Statement

It is the mission of St. Bernadette School to maintain an educational environment that provides the opportunity for each student to grow faithfully and spiritually in the Roman Catholic Tradition and achieve their academic, social and cultural potential. We as Parish, Faculty and Staff are committed to developing in students the awareness and responsibility of community and the call to serve others and work toward social justice. With the guidance and direction of Jesus Christ and the assistance and cooperation of the St. Bernadette Parish Community, students will be challenged to imitate Christ.

Admission Policy

St. Bernadette School is a Catholic, parochial elementary school operated by St. Bernadette Parish, to provide a quality, Catholic education for the children of the parish. Non-parishioners may be admitted on a space available basis only. Placement of all students in grade one through eight will only be made after evaluation of prior academic records by the appropriate school personnel to determine if our school can meet the academic needs of the child.

Children entering kindergarten must be five years old by September 30. All children planning to enter kindergarten must participate in the kindergarten assessment process to determine school readiness. Readiness of children for kindergarten is determined by the assessment team which includes observations made during the assessment. The decision for placement in kindergarten is based upon readiness tests with appropriate school personnel.

If the number of student registrations exceeds the available space for any grade, the following criteria will be applied to determine placement:

1.              Registered, active members of the parish. (Kindergarten students must first be determined to be ready to begin school).

2.              Children with siblings already attending St. Bernadette School.

3.              Date of registration in the parish.

A waiting list will be maintained for active parishioners if class size has reached capacity. (Class size in each grade is restricted to 30.) Those families with children on the waiting list who would like to continue on the waiting list the following school year should notify the school office during the registration period. (School registration takes place the end of January, and is announced in the parish bulletin.) Admission for all new students is conditional for the first quarter. Official admission is not considered complete until all academic and health records have been received.

Student and family cooperation with school personnel, practices and policy is expected. Continued enrollment is not automatic or guaranteed. Students and families may continue to be enrolled in the school by invitation. Invitation to enroll in

St. Bernadette School or continued enrollment in St. Bernadette School may be withdrawn at the end of the school year, or at any time during a current school year.

Student or family failure to be cooperative may result in St. Bernadette School withdrawing the student or family from enrollment in the school.
