What does God mean to you?

On the group #29 retreat at Manresa two short months ago, retreat master Deacon Bob Furlow read to retreatants the beautiful Psalm 139, which begins “Oh Lord, You have searched me and known me.”

Continuing, he shared another version of the psalm, as he had rewritten it himself. Very nice indeed. But before urging retreatants to think about what God meant to them and effectively encouraging them to write their own version of Psalm 139, he read the following breathtaking verse. Read on to see what 15 year old Angela Christmas found within herself during a similar exercise that Deacon Bob conducted at St. Clement of Rome a few years ago. Then read Psalm 139 and consider writing what God means to you.

ANGELA’S PSALM

My God, you are the sun that shines upon my face during the day.
You are the moon and stars that watch me sleep at night.
You are the gentle wind that soothes my aching heart,
The kind hand that wipes away my tears.
In my hours of most need,
You are there to comfort me.
In my most happy moments
You are there to help me rejoice.
My deepest fears and darkest secrets you already know
You created me and molded me.
In my mind, you are a constant.
You touch me and I am no longer troubled.
You speak to me and I am no longer afraid.
Your love is my life source
For which there is no substitute.
