Daily Examen has everything that should be in prayer

At the July 2003 Manresa retreat, our retreat master, Deacon Bob Furlow gave the group a handout paper and suggested we use it daily as part of our prayer life. It wasn’t until I got home and reread the prayer did I realize it encompasses everything that should be in prayer. I submit it for your reading and future use.

DAILY EXAMEN

1. “Thank you.” We become aware of God’s gifts in our life. All the ways that he has made Himself present to us today. What am I grateful for?

2. “Help me.” In the light of His gifts, have I been aware of His presence?? Pray that he will help you to see and hear.

3. “I love You.” We acknowledge His love and our desire to love and follow Him. “I really do love You, in spite of the weaknesses and failure in my responses.”

4. “I’m sorry.” Ask God to forgive you for your failings. This is not a depressing moment, but a moment of reconciliation. Say I’m sorry.

5. “Be with me.” With confidence and faith that God will grant what is best for me, I ask for His grace and help. “Be with me, Lord...With your grace, I shall love you better during this next half-day.”

6. Close with the Lord’s Prayer.
