A spiritually invigorated group of SCB retreatants cracks one last set of smiles for the camera before heading home from their July retreat on the holy grounds of Manresa.

July group returns from Manresa;

SCB Labor Day group invites others

The July retreat group has returned from Manresa, but the annual Labor Day retreat at Manresa is still right around the corner. If anyone is interested in attending the retreat, from August 28 - 31, 2003, please contact Jeff Tully at 764-6989.

From the beginning of this retreat (25 years ago) until about five years ago the Labor Day retreat would begin on Friday and end on Monday (Labor Day). By having the retreat on a holiday, the Manresa staff had to work, so the retreat was changed to reflect the same schedule as most of the other retreats (Thursday - Sunday). It is very refreshing to attend the Labor Day retreat and then return home on a Sunday and still have another day off to help reflect on the past few days.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor:

"Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country," said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. "All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation."

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
