Rev. Monsignor Lawrence Hecker

Father Larry honored for 44 years of devoted service

The Lamb, May 2002

Emotions filled the Borromeo Room on March 14 as many St. Charles Borromeo Men of Manresa joined other parishioners to honor Rev. Monsignor Lawrence Hecker at a reception recognizing his 44 years of devoted service as a priest, and of course his well-deserved retirement. There was sadness for his leaving, joy for his future, fondness for his personality, and deep gratitude for the service, care, encouragement, guidance, intellect, wit and spiritual wisdom which he has shared with us since joining our parish family.

A youthful and enthusiastic 70 year old, Father Larry is always on the go, and still has the amazing ability and the energy to play racquetball each week.

After serving as pastor in other parishes for over 30 years, Father Larry was assigned to St. Charles Borromeo parish on August 1, 2000. Among the many special blessings he shared with our parish, he introduced and taught numerous Bible study classes which were greatly enjoyed by those who attended.

Without missing a beat, he courageously took the reins of the parish following Father John's death. During that most difficult period, he saw through his own grief to comfort us, to guide us, to help us to understand, and to continue the day-to-day operations required to keep the parish running, both physically and spiritually. We will never be able to thank him enough for everything he has done for us, except in our continued prayers.

Father Larry can now be reached at St. John Vianney Villa in Marrero, a newly constructed community for retired priests.
