PLAYER OF THE WEEK - YEAR


Player of the Year; May 30, 1998 (Pre-Playoffs)
Jackie Fournier (aka JF-K and Jackie-0) - The St. Raphael pitcher
was undefeated, and, since she pitched every game, so was her team. 
Her ERA was microscopic. She pitched so many no-hitters, SCFun lost 
count. Besides being a great pitcher, her coach, Mo Jackson says "She
hits, she fields, and is a smart ballplayer. And, above all, she is a
team player."
Casie Rhodes & Beth Benoit - Both are seniors at East Greenwich, 
Beth an outfielder while Casie catches. East Greenwich only lost one 
game on the playing field. Both sluggers contributed greatly to the 
success of the team. Every game, it seemed one or both was slugging 
the heck out of the ball. Doubles, triples, home runs, rbi's. Casie 
hit .520, an East Greenwich record.
Week #8+; May 23+, 1998
How about - St. Ray's Katie Costigan with two 
hits, an rbi, and two runs in their 6-2 win over North Providence. 
Kim Warrington and Elin Zaikowski, the NK players both went 2-4
in their 8-5 win over Narragansett. Warrington pitched a four-hitter. 
Barrington's Kristi McDermott threw a no-hitter against 
Middletown.
Caitlin Springer's 2-hit pitching and the offense of Crissy 
Bowers and Emily Gedney in Middletown's 8-0 win over Narragansett. 
Casie Rhode's home run to help EG beat Bay View, 3-2. Allison
Armstrong and Kitty Gilbane's bats lifted Barrington over 
Narragansett, 6-2. St. Ray's Janelle Kern had the key hit in 
their game with North Providence, an eighth inning double to drive in 
two, and give St. Ray's a perfect season.
Week #7; May 16, 1998
Kim Warrington & Kelly Steely - North Kingstown should make the
playoffs. They had a good week, beating South Kingstown, Coventry, and 
Chariho. They went to the 7th, tied 3-3 with Westerly before losing, 
4-3. Kim Warrington pitched well, allowing 13 hits (4, 4, & 5 
respectively) in the three wins. Kelly Steely had three hits and two 
rbi's in the Coventry game and two hits, one a double, in the Chariho 
game.
Christie Crozier & Erika Austin - Cumberland went 3-0 for the 
week to remain atop the Northern Division. Christie pitched a 
three-hit, 5-0 shutout, against Ponaganset in which she had two 
doubles and two rbi's. Erika was on the mound when they beat Lincoln, 
5-3, and North Smithfield, 2-1. Christie scored the winning run in the
N. Smithfield game.

Week #6; May 09, 1998
Melissa O'Meara, Jenn Nelson, Jen Stanley & Beth Benoit - 
Melissa O'Meara won two (Tiverton and Narragansett) for Westerly 
including a one-hitter against Narragansett. Jen Nelson also won two 
(Ponaganset and La Salle) for North Providence to keep them one step 
behind St. Ray's in the West. East Greenwich, with Jen Stanley 
pitching beat Mt. Hope (3-hitter) and North Kingstown (2-hitter). EG's
Beth Benoit - her bat exploded in those games with all kinds of stuff,
like multiple home runs, triples, rbi's, yada, yada, yada.
Jackie Fournier - St. Ray's pitcher struck out 18 Scituate batters 
in seven innings. St. Ray's remains the only undefeated team in the 
league. She also pitched a one-hitter against Moses Brown.
Week #5; May 02, 1998
Linda Galib - The Portsmouth hurler had two shutouts to 
keep Portsmouth on the heels of Barrington. She beat Westerly 8-0 and 
North Kingstown 10-0 on a 1-hitter. Teammates Jessica Stevens and 
Casey Gavin provided much of the offensive power in those wins.
Week #4; Apr 25, 1998
Jen Stanley, Tara Natale, & Beth Benoit - East Greenwich 
regained the top spot in the South win a big win over Westerly. They 
also beat Coventry. Jen pitched a 4-hitter against Coventry and a 
2-hitter against Westerly. Beth continued her heavy hitting. Natale 
played well with two hits against Westerly.
Tara Gurka, Jess Gagnon & Gioia Ramella - Three wins by
North Smithfield, all against .500 or better teams. Tara had all three
wins on the mound for North Smithfield. She had a 1-hitter against La 
Salle. Jess and Gioia had big bats. Both had three hits in the win 
over Woonsocket. One of Gioia's was a home run. Jess had a homer and 
two rbi's in their win over Ponaganset.
Week #3; Apr 18, 1998
Melanie Miller, Jen Sisson, & Michaela Giblin - Pilgrim 
had two wins. Catcher Melanie Miller went 4 for 4 and pitcher Jen 
Sisson had a one-hitter in their win over North Providence. In their 
win over Classical, Michaela Giblin had 3 hits and four runs scored as
did Melanie Miller.
No-hitters - There were three this past week. Kate Unsworth 
from Bay View beat Rogers. Tara Gurka of North Smithfield did
it to Scituate. And Rogers got no-hit again by Portsmouth's Linda 
Galib.

Week #2; Apr 11, 1998
Melissa O'Meara & her teammates - The Westerly senior 
had a good week with two wins against East Greenwich and Coventry. She 
two-hit Coventry while striking out 10 for a 7-1 win. At East 
Greenwich, Melissa's battery-mate, Sarah Morin had the game 
winning rbi in their 4-3 win over East Greenwich that went eight 
innings. Lee Ann Simone had three hits in the EG game. 
Carla Murano and Lauren Manfred were also big for Westerly.
Caitlin Springer - The Middletown senior pitched a no-hitter
against Rogers on April 9th.

Week #1; Apr 04, 1998
Jackie Fournier - St. Raphael - pitched a perfect game, 
striking out 13 of 15 batters, against Moses Brown. She was also 2 
for 4, with 2 rbi's and 2 runs scored.
A lot of players - The following all had good games to help their
teams to get off to a good start. Sharna Rattey and Laura Lucivero
of Lincoln; Brianne Doyle of Ponaganset; Kristi McDermott
of Barrington; Christine Kane, Casie Rhodes, and Jen Stanley of

NORTH PROVIDENCE - Rhode Island's Gatorade fast-pitch
Player of the Year capped a perfect season with a
near-perfect game last night, earning St. Raphael its
second straight state title along the way.
  Sophomore right-hander Jackie Fournier tossed her sixth
one-hitter of the season, as the Western Division
champs blanked Cumberland, 2-0, in the championship
game of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League State
Fast-pitch Tournament yesterday at Governor John A.
Notte Jr. Memorial Park.
  "This is great - I can't even explain it," said
Fournier, who was also on the mound last year when St.
Ray's claimed its first state crown in the 20-year
history of the school's softball program. "No one has
more heart than this team. We put in such a team effort
today. Everyone was fielding and getting the hits when
we needed them. I can't ask for a better team behind
me."
  The Saints, who extended their winning streak to 23-0,
cruised through the double-elimination tournament with
victories over Middletown, East Greenwich, Barrington
and North Providence.
  Cumberland, which was making its first championship
appearance since switching to fast-pitch nearly 12
years ago, faced a tougher battle after suffering a
first-round loss to North Providence.
  The Clippers fought their way back, though, keeping
their playoff hopes alive with wins over Bay View,
Barrington and East Greenwich.
  The two-time Northern Division champion advanced to
last night's game, which was postponed from Saturday
because of rain, with an extra-inning victory over
North Providence in last week's losers'-bracket final.
  Although they compete in different divisions, St.
Raphael and Cumberland had met once in a crossover game
during the regular season. Fournier also pitched a
one-hitter in that contest, pacing St. Ray's to an 8-0
victory. But the Saints knew they couldn't rest on
their laurels.
  "We were confident, but we knew we couldn't
underestimate them," said Saints junior Katie
Costigan, who plays second base. "They were the
Cinderella team of the tournament. You have to give
them a lot of credit. They came back out of the losers'
bracket, and that's hard to do."
  Costigan, who belted a game-winning grand slam in last
year's championship, came through in the clutch again
last night, poking a shot into right field in the first
inning that moved Erica Jackson to third. Costigan then
got caught in a run-down, which allowed Jackson to
score.
  Costigan also added an insurance run in the fourth when
she was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on
a fielder's choice by Rhianna DaCruz and then crossed
the plate on another fielder's choice by Tiffany Bell.
  In the first game, "I hadn't hit the ball off her
(Christie Crozier)," said Costigan, who finished with
two hits. "But I knew I had to get on anyway I 
could so I could score for my team. We had to help
Jackie out with a cushion."
  Cumberland threatened to score in the fifth when
Caitlin Schimmel doubled to left for the Clippers' only
hit of the night and then stole third. But Fournier
retired the next two batters to end the inning.
  Fournier finished with seven strikeouts, walking just
one batter.
  Junior catcher Janelle Kern contributed two hits for
the Saints and caught one runner attempting to steal
second.
  "This year, our theme after every practice and after
every game was to believe - to believe that we could
win two in a row," said St. Ray's coach Mo Jackson.
"As we kept winning, they just got more and more
confident that they could do it."
  Cumberland coach Sheila DiOrio said that she felt the
rain delay affected her players.
  "That was a big concern," she said. "We had been on
a roll, and (with the postponement) we kind of lost
that high. It was hard to keep them motivated,
especially practicing inside."
  Crozier, a senior, gave an admirable performance in the
losing effort, scattering six hits, fanning five and
walking none for the Clippers, who close their season
at 18-5.
  "We're really proud of the kids," DiOrio said. "It's
unfortunate that the scoreboard says there has to be a
winner and a loser. We told the girls that in their
heads, they're also winners because of what we did to
overcome all of the odds to get this far."

When is a state champion not a state champion? When they play for the NSA - two teams were prevented from participating in the NSA states this August. When a call was made to the NSA headquarters about it - one of the teams was told that they were not allowed in because they were too good (this comment was attributed by the state director from the NSA softball commissioner.) Hopefully we can someday have a real state championship - its sad when games are played at the girls expense - what do you think - should we keep the Yankees out of the Major League World Series?

How can it be fair for St. Rays to use and recruit illegal players and end up on double secret probation while East Greenwich and South Kingstown lose actual athletic events because they didn't put names on a roster? Do you think that has anything to do with Mr. Lynch being a St Ray's grad?

Did you know that one of the games that South Kingstown played didn't count in the standings for the Portsmouth team? It seems that due to the uneven scheduling between Portsmouth and Barrington the High School decided to invalidate the win of Portsmouth over SK while Portsmouth had games remaining. Though Portsmouth ended up having a better record than Barrington - they won the division by a 1/2 game - Barrington won the coin toss and was placed as the First seed and got a game against East Providence. Portsmouth had to go to North Providence and the gate with a loss. - from a fan 9/98.
