CLEMSON UNIVERSITY

(Some) COLLEGES

A few examples of east-coast schools.
This is a synopsis of USNews' College Rankings
U.S. News came out with their '98-'99 figures on August 21, 1998. Even so, some figures could still lag a year.

Maine | Rhode Island | Connecticut
New York | New Jersey | Pennsylvania
... and into the Southern Region
(where some schools have honor codes) ...
Virginia | North Carolina | South Carolina
Georgia | Florida

Note # 1 of 3: Example: "97-1-800-800-A/R/WL" is ... 97 = class year; class rank; verbal SAT; math SAT; A=accepted (not necessarily attending, however), R=rejected, or WL=waiting list.
Note # 2 of 3: The percentage accepted (not necessarily enrolling); the percentage graduating and the mid 50% SAT scores are from "The College Handbook - 1998". The "Yield" is from the book, "Insider's Guide to the Colleges". Yield is the percentage of those accepted who actually enroll. Schools with yields under 40% are considered "backup schools". (State Universities may have high yields because in-staters don't apply anywhere else.) A good school, for example, would likely accept less than 50% applying, graduate over 80%, and yield 40% or more.
Note # 3 of 3: U.S. News, on their college page, explains the differences between University and Liberal Arts, National and Regional.
* Setting's ... are U=Urban, S=Suburban, & R=Rural.
* Rating ... is for Northern or Southern Region unless preceded by
                "N-" (National).

* Nice campus. As of Sep, 1998, they have the most cumbersome web
site of any college site that that SCFun has visited. If their web
site was a simple bill-board off Route 95, administrators would be
outraged at its "appearance" - but a web site, ... no one apparently
knows enough to feel comfortable criticizing it.
Admissions will be very slow to answer your e-mail, if you are
lucky enough to get an answer.
Has great theatre program - BFA.
Pharmacy, of course, is one of its best schools.
URI will send a postcard which will explain how to use your phone
to get your application status.
URI will accept about 1,293 RI citizens into the class of 1999.

Academic Work On-line: Encyclopaedia Diplomica | Oxford Academic | Dissertation.com

Accents: Irish or British ... Consider using an Irish or British accent during any college interviews. Your chances of being accepted to the college of your choice will greatly increase if you use these accents as opposed to, say a Southern, Brooklyn, Down-East, or Mid-West accent.

Americans often assume that someone with the "cleanly articulated" speech of an upper-class Brit is more intelligent than most, and has "a little more control of the situation". With a Brooklyn accent, you will be perceived as "crass".

Professor Alan Stern, from the University of Connecticut, has written books, which are accompanied by audio tapes, that can help one learn a new accent. He is the founder of Dialect/Accents Specialists.

Admissions: Berkeley sued over minority admissions. Here is CNN's story which was dated 2/3/99. It may not be active now. Below are the first few paragraphs. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Jesus Rios started working in the fields at age 8, dug ditches with his father after high school classes and graduated with a grade-point average above 4.0.
Gregory McConnell Jr., grandson of a black law professor, also got high grades in high school, played varsity tennis and won a full-tuition scholarship to an East Coast college.
Yet both McConnell and Rios were denied admission last fall to the University of California at Berkeley. Newsweek, April 5, 1999

Advice: Always carry a pen and date everything. | Don't ever leave your drink unattended. | Keep your head up and watch your back. | Cover your ass. | When you first show up for a new job, drop the "attitude". | Don't be surprised if your boss doesn't want the best you have to give. | At work, never volunteer. | Don't co-sign anything. | Live below your means and save. | Don't buy a house with gas or a well. | If they ask $10, they mean $8, they'll take $6, it's worth $4, offer them $2. | Show up on time! - (Free Personalized Calendar), also Jump and Yahoo!

B+ and C- Students: Tired of all the "A Students" getting the bulk of the scholarships? Warren Bielke, a Minnesota businessman, has endowed a $1 million college fund at his old high school. The hitch - you must be a B+ to C- student in order to qualify.

College Park: Student Living.

Computers: Be careful before you buy a computer for college. Check with your college for the necessary specs. Also, you may be able to get a student educational discount if purchased through the school. For refurbished computers, check this IBM site.

Crime: The college of your choice will be happy to provide you with their "crime reports".

Honors: How do the honors programs at various colleges compare ... to both an honors program and a non-honors program at another college? Some non-honors are probably more difficult than some honors programs.

Cheap MAGAZINES: Visit ACMMS or MagazineLine.

Mall-Speak: Many colleges are fed up with how poorly the typical incoming freshman speaks. Too much "mall-speak". Smith College President Ruth Simmons has had enough. Last year Smith introduced "Speaking Across the Curriculum" to help improve the situation. More and more colleges are copying Smith.

College NEWSPAPERS: CPNET (College Press Network) | Student.com

Questions (for college visit): Yada!

Roommates: Careful, when a college asks for your preference in a roommate, they often assume the qualities you want in a roommate are the same qualities that you possess. They don't ask about yourself. In reality, you know there are some messy kids who will want a neat roommate.

Smoking: Are there any colleges that have, or will have in a few years, a policy to prohibit smoking on campus? Many colleges have dorms that are substance free. Not only won't you be smoking, but, if you are of age, there will be no booze either.

Make a STATEMENT: When the admissions officer calls to ask why you are not enrolling, take a moment to "make a statement". Just don't say you prefer College XYZ. Help improve the school you are turning down for the other students who will be applying there. There must be something you didn't like about the school, something that could be improved. - "Your school never answers their E-Mail"; "Your building interiors were filthy."; "The food in the dining hall had no taste.". Something!

Teacher Certification Reciprocity: Most states probably have agreements with Rhode Island. So far, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida do.

TRAILERS: For trailer rentals, try U-Haul.com. They even have a message board for those who want to share a rental.
