RULES

"DROPPED 3rd STRIKE"!

A dropped third strike includes any pitch thrown into the dirt before it does or does not bounce into the catcher's glove, whether or not it is dropped. Of course, the batter must swing and miss.

What is "TRAVELING"?

Traveling is when a player takes two steps without dribbling. If she takes three, then that's not traveling.
There is a difference between "two steps taken one at a time" versus "two steps taken simultaneously (jump)".
To be more specific, try the following ...

Traveling (running with the ball) is moving a foot or feet in
any direction in excess of prescribed limits while holding the ball.
The limits on foot movements are as follows:
1.0 A player who catches the ball with both feet on the floor,
may pivot, using either foot. When one foot is lifted, the other is
the pivot foot.
2.0 A player, who catches the ball while moving or dribbling,
may stop, and establish a pivot foot as follows:
  a. If both feet are off the floor and the players lands:
    1. Simultaneously on both feet, either foot may be the
        pivot.
    2. On one foot followed by the other, the first foot to
        touch is the pivot.
    3. On one foot, the player may jump off that foot and
simultaneously land on both. Neither foot can be a pivot in
        this case.
  b. If one foot is on the floor:
    1. It is the pivot when the other foot touches in a step.
    2. The player may jump off that foot and simultaneously
land on both. Neither foot can be a pivot in this case.
3.0 After coming to a stop and establishing a pivot foot:
  a. The pivot foot may be lifted, but not returned to the
floor, before the ball is released on a pass or try for goal.
  b. If the player jumps neither foot may be returned to the
floor before the ball is released on a pass or try for goal.
  c. The pivot foot may not be lifted, before the ball is
      released, to start a dribble.
4.0 After coming to a stop when neither foot can be a pivot:
  a. One or both feet may be lifted but may not be returned
to the floor before the ball is released on a pass or try for
      goal.
  b. Neither foot may be lifted, before the ball is released,
      to start a dribble.
5.0 A player holding the ball:
  a. May not touch the floor with a knee or any other part of
the body other than hand or foot.
  b. After gaining possession while on the floor and touching
with other than hand or foot, may not stand or attempt to get
      up.

  • The "SCRIPT" - On Feb 24, 1998, Nykesha Sales, a great basketball player from UConn became an actor. At the time, she was the second leading scorer in the history of UConn Women's Basketball, just ONE POINT behind Kerry Bascom-Poliquim. That was a wonderful accomplishment. Injured and out for the rest of the season, the senior was allowed to score two (why not just one to tie the record?) points. Now, having "acted" her 2177th and 2178th points, she is in the UConn Record Book as the player with an asterisk tattooed to her forehead. Shame on UConn Coach, Geno Auriemma, Villanova Coach, Harry Perretta, Big East Commissioner, Michael Tranghese and other involved in writing this SCRIPT. (What was the point? Why wasn't the initial jump at least legitimate ... after each team exchanged baskets, UConn was "given" the ball. They didn't earn it! Tranghese said he would not have okayed the SCRIPT if it had been a male basketball player.) Update - 3/11/98, ESPN reports that Nykesha was credited with a basket she never made in the Jan 22nd game against Seton Hall. Do you think if Geno had it to do all over again, he would? Boo!
  • The "SCRIPT-II" - On Oct 25, 2003, Nate Haasis was given a "Nykesha". He was allowed to become only the 12th Illinois High School quarterback to pass for 5,000 yards or more. His team, Southeast, was losing at the time to Cahokia, late in the game, when the two coaches struck a deal. "We will let you score if you let Nate complete the needed pass". Two days later, Nate called the commissioner of the Central Eight Conference to ask that the completion not count. "I didn't feel right," said Haasis. Congratulations!
