From the Narragansett Times - May 06, 2002 WOOD RIVER JUNCTION - While familiarity may breed success, having a wealth of talent surely doesn't hurt your chances either. Bishop Hendricken and Westerly made that point abundantly clear as they captured their respective titles at the Rick Schomp Invitational on Saturday. The Hendricken boys' took six events on their way to a 98.5 point total while runner-up Rogers finished with 82 points on the strength of four field event victories. South Kingstown placed third overall (44 points). On the boys side of the competition Chariho's 4x400 meter relay team narrowed a small gap near the 850 meter mark and pushed ahead of Pilgrim and Cranston West, closing quickly to the line for the win. South's Colin Murphy fired out of the blocks to nail down the 400 meter gold in 53.3. Murphy rolled into the second hundred meters off the curve and into a significant headwind, one which toyed and frustrated competitors through the day. "It was windy on the back (stretch). I had to stride through there and I was just trying to kick it in then last 100 meters," said the Rebel half-mile specialist. "I'd like to drop my time a second or two before the states. I'll be moving up to the 800 as soon as I get in better shape but for now I'll be running the 400 to keep that spot filled for the team." Murphy's teammate Zak Thomas crushed the field in the discus. His throw of 142-11 easily topped Andrew Martucci and Brandon Burd, both of Rogers High School. The Vikings had a banner day in the field events taking the high jump, long jump, triple jump and the shot put. Ryan Fitzgerald was named the meet's most valuable performer in the field for his 53-10 heave in the shot. Viking hoopster E.J. DeWitt (6-0) won the high jump in a tight competition over South's Jake Flaherty, and Narragansett's Steve Scowcroft (both 5-10). Two second place finishers of note were Chariho's Horgan and South Kingstown's Andrew Cashen. Horgan went right to the action from the gun with Shea All-Stater Emmanuel Karngar in the opening meters of the 800. Cashen and Hendricken's Dan O'Brien hooked up in the tightest head to head matchup of the day in the 110 hurdles. Neither could obtain a discernible edge through the sixth and seventh barriers. O'Brien leaned at the line for the victory however as both sprinters were awarded the same time of 15.6.

Damp, wet, raw, yuk.
Check out the pole vault - the two participants were on the honor system.
Also, no bar, just an elastic rope to jump over. The bar broke months ago.

Jon Stokes looked impressive in the 3,000M run. Cormick Lynch floored the

South Kingstown loses for first time
It wasn't a bad day. A little cool but manageable.
South was spread thin. Gavin Logan was in street clothes.
Andy Cashen was not 100%. Josh Oberle had some difficulty
in the 3000 and had to drop out.
Colin Murphy tried the triple jump. Cormick Lynch looked
good in the high jump. He comes in with a lot of speed and
almost goes past the landing pad. Flaherty was thrilled with
his 6'-0" high jump.
The was some "real" competition in the pole vault. And they
even had a real cross bar.
David Stanhope, still out of shape, finsihed back in the pack
in the 150.
Michael Raiche has joined the track team - how about that.

From the Narragansett Times - May 09, 2002 SOUTH KINGSTOWN - The South Kingstown boys' track team had their biggest tests of the season when they took on Westerly and North Kingstown on Tuesday in their last dual meet of the year. With the events being all close finishes, the Rebels lost to both opponents. South Kingstown is suffering from some injuries right now, which may have hurt them against the state-champion caliber squads they had to go up against at Curtis Corner Middle School. Coach Jim Champion felt that the loss was disappointing, but his team can definitely learn from it. "We had a tough day, but sometimes losing is good," said Champion. "We don't want to lose again, so, hopefully, they don't like the feeling of losing." Junior Gavin Logan, a co-captain in the sprinting, jumping, and relay events, couldn't compete because of an injury. Logan is one of the fastest sprinters and best jumpers in the state, but he's not scheduled to be out of the lineup for very long. "We missed Gavin, but we're getting him ready for bigger and better things," said Champion. "It's better for us and him to have had him sit out that meet." That bigger thing is the Southern Division Championship meet on Monday at Chariho High School. The Rebels are also taking part in the Classical Classic in Providence on Saturday. "It'll be a great meet on Monday," said Champion. "I think that North Kingstown, Westerly, Chariho, and us have a great chance of winning the division," said Champion. "It's going to come down to the last event." Westerly defeated the Rebels, 83-70, on Tuesday, while North Kingstown pulled out an 80-74 victory over them. North Kingstown out-pointed the Bulldogs 85-69. The Rebels won many events despite the losses, so with more placers, they could pull out those close meets. South Kingstown won the 4x400, as well as the 4x100. Even without Logan, the 4x100 relay team clocked in an impressive time. Andrew Cashen won both hurdle events for South, while senior Chris Wright had a big meet by winning the 800, and being a member of both relay teams. Cashen was a member of the relay teams, and senior Colin Murphy was in both winning relay squads. "I'm pleased with the effort that Colin Murphy put in," said Champion. "He was in four events, and two of them, the long jump and the 200, were ones he hadn't been in since junior high. That made me feel good as a coach." Sophomore Jake Flaherty won the high jump for the Rebels, while junior Zack Thomas won the hammer with a throw of 189-3. Having a big meet for the opponents were Westerly junior J.R. Lamotte and North Kingstown senior Pat Hannon. Lamotte won the 400 and the javelin, while Hannon won the long jump and triple jump. "Some others tried new events, and I knew the meet would be close," said Champion. "Cormick Lynch tried the high jump, and he made 5-3. That's a good effort for him." Champion thinks that there are some areas that his team is particularly strong in. "We look good in the relays, and Thomas is improving in the throwing events," said Champion. "He's a tough competitor for other teams. Logan and Wright are also strong in their events." The Rebels are also preparing for the Class B Championship meet in two weeks, and South Kingstown looks as if they have the talent to pull out some big wins. That's if they have everybody healthy. "We're going to be patient, need to be injury free, and we're going to practice hard," said Champion. "We have some injuries, but that's natural. We'll see what happens."

A depleted South gets 2nd
Meet was originally scheduled for Monday, May 13. An all-day rain moved
it to Wednesday.
South did well considering. Gavin Logan was hurting. He did try the 100
but pulled up lame. His right thigh was heavily bandaged. Josh Oberle was
under the weather. Cashen was not 100%. Cormick Lynch was sidelined.
Who else? Chris Wright missed the 800 with a false start.
David Stanhope ran a 4:44 1500M in the unseeded race. He turned out to
be the best of the worst, you might say. SCFun wouldn't say that but you
might.
Jon Stokes doubled in the 1500M and 3000M.
Thomas won the Hammer. Colin Murphy won the 800. Zack Smith got 2nd and
was so exhausted, he was unable to run a leg of the 4x400. David Stanhope
filled in.

From ProJo - May 26, 2002 WARWICK -- Hope's Yudehweh Gbaa captured the individual spotlight, but, as expected, nobody could match Hendricken in the race for teams honors as the Hawks captured the crown at the annual Hendricken Invitational track meet with a 113-point margin of victory. Hendricken compiled 151 points. Classical was second with 38 and Hope was third with 32. Gbba made the major contribution to Hope's finish as he scored 20 points for championships in the long jump and high hurdles. Gbba was the only double individual champion in the meet that restricts entries to one running event, one field event and one relay event. Hendricken had six individual champions and also captured the 4 x 800 relay championship. Will Blackmon, the Hawks senior All-American football player, ran away with the 200-meter title in a time of 22.1. The Hawks also dominated the distance events as Dave Murphy captured the 3,000 title in 8:46.8 and Steve Walsh took the 1,500-meter title. The Hawks' Michael Freeman was named the Outstanding Field Event performer for his 211-02 effort en route to the hammer title. The Hawks other indivdiual champions were Ryan Vealey in the javelin and Anthony Turilli in the pole vault. Shea's Emmanuel Karngar was named the meet's top runner for his 1:55.7 in the 800 meters.
