Mellissa Jarrell announced het resignation in a
letter dated May 12, 1999. She will accept a position
as assistant coach for the "Georgia Pride" on the
Women's Professional League
Entering into her sixth year at the helm of the Rhode Island softball
squad, Melissa Jarrell finally has the program going in the right
direction: a quality staff, improved facilities, and a group of committed
players. The Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 1994, Jarrell has positioned
her squads as prominent contenders for the conference title year after
year, leading her team to a 115 - 125 - 1 overall record since her arrival.
Prior to the Rhode Island, Jarrell served as the head coach at California -

Jarrell led the Lions to three NCAA appearances and the 1989 NCAA
Championship title. While at Trenton State Jarrell assisted with a
nationally ranked team that finished second in the nation in 1990 after its
1989 title run. In 1988 she helped to guide the Lions to a fourth place
finish in the nation. During her final year at North Carolina, she served

Feb 20, 1999 (Game #04): UNC - Raleigh
From "The Daily Tar Heel", 2/22/99. (Did Melissa Jarrell play for
Donna Papa? - guessing yes, for two years.)
In addition to the loss to Purdue, UNC dropped a 5-3 game to
Rhode Island Saturday afternoon.
Rhode Island scored all of its runs in the first inning. The Rams
had six hits, including Stephanie Poetzsch's two-run single.
"Rhode Island was aggressive up at the plate; they came up
swinging," Papa said. "I was pleased with the fact that we did
come back and they didn't score any more runs past the first
inning."
Trailing 5-3, UNC had a runner on second in the top of the seventh
with one out when controversy erupted between Papa and the
umpiring crew.
Senior Colleen Lefferts hit what Papa thought was a double down
the right-field line. The umpire, however, ruled the ball foul and
Lefferts returned to bat.
Lefferts' next contact rolled on the third-base line and was again
called foul. Both decisions were argued by Papa.
"It hurt our momentum," Papa said.
Lefferts' finally ended up bouncing back to the pitcher and being
the second out of the inning.
UNC's loss to the Rams was sandwiched between wins against
Norfolk State and Drexel.

Mar 23, 1999 (Game #15): BU - away
From BU's Newspaper (www.dfpress.com).
King reigns supreme on rubber; Peter Chase; DFP Staff
Boston University pitcher Robyn King was due for a little help
from her friends. While King pitched a gem on Saturday against
Boston College, she was tagged with a 2-1 loss despite
surrendering just two hits in a complete-game effort.
Yesterday, King was hoping for run support two times over. The
sophomore right-hander started both games of yesterday's
doubleheader against the University of Rhode Island because four
BU players were suspended for six games for violating team rules,
including BU's only other starting pitcher, junior Mary Colleran.
But the Terriers make-shift lineup, which included two players
who did not play in either game against the Eagles, gave King 13
runs over two games yesterday-- plenty of support for King to
lead the Terriers to 8-0 and 5-1 wins.
...
King was in command all day; the Rams threatened only once in
each game, both instances coming in the first inning. In the
opener, URI put runners on first and second with one out, but a
fielder's choice and a strikeout kept the Rams off the
scoreboard. In the second game, the Rams scored their lone run
in the first inning on an RBI triple by center fielder Robin
Davies. ... After the rocky first innings, King cruised the rest
of the way. In each contest, she pitched through a stretch in
which she retired 12 batters in a row.

CHRISTINA KOWALSKI HURLS SJU'S FIRST-EVER PERFECT GAME; HAWKS SPLIT
WITH RHODE ISLAND IN A-10 OPENER
E. Norriton, Pa. - Junior Christina Kowalski had done everything
for the St. Joseph's Hawks softball program since her arrival on the
Philadelphia campus in the Fall of 1996 with the exception of
pitching a no-hitter. Six one-hitters had served as a source of
frustration for the affable 5-9 red-head prior to Saturday's
Atlantic 10 opening doubleheader against the University of Rhode
Island at East Norriton Field. But, on this sunny afternoon, all
that came to an end as Kowalski pitched SJU's first-ever perfect
game to lead the Hawks to a 3-0 win in the opening game of a
doubleheader against the Rams.
Rhode Island won the nightcap, 3-2, in eight innings on a
controversial call.
"It feels great, and I have definitely worked hard to accomplish
this," stated Kowalski, who is also the school's all-time homerun
leader with 24. "One- hitters, no-hitters, you win the game, and
most of the time I have pitched the one-hitters, we have won.
The main objective is to win and anything you do besides that is
an extra bonus.
"I think our defense played awesome. I am a drop ball pitcher and
they are always hitting the ball somewhere and to play perfect
defense is just great," added the Hawk hurler.
"We knew from the fourth inning on that nobody had been on base
and we were counting the outs," said SJU coach Charlie Wieners.
"She has been pitching well all year and she kept the ball down
and away. I am very excited for her."
Freshman Nina Toscano provided the Hawks with their first run of
the game, driving home sophomore Heather Chapman, who had reached
base via an error, with a one-out single in the third inning.
Another freshman, Missy Rhoades, clubbed a lead-off home run over
the left centerfield fence to open the fifth, putting the Hawks
ahead, 2-0.
A third and final insurance run came in the sixth as Chapman
singled home freshman Kristin Nau.
Kowalski, not known as a strikeout pitcher, retired the final two
batters via the "K" to end the historic performance. The win
upped her mark to 11-3 on the year. Ironically, her last game,
a 13-0 win over Wagner on March 31, she took a no-hitter into the
fifth and final inning before allowing a one-out single, her
sixth career one-hitter.
In the nightcap, sophomore Kristin Doris started and went 4 and
1/3 strong innings, allowing just one earned run, before
relinquisjing to fellow sophomore Susan Dugan, who struck out
five Rams over 3 and 2/3 innings. Dugan, however, suffered the
defeat, allowing one controversial run in the top of the eighth
inning, to fall to 4-6 on the year.
After Rhode Island scored to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the
first, SJU battled back to tie on a RBI single by sophomore
Courtney Quinones. Rhoades, who is sporting one of the hottest
bats on the team, drove home Kowalski in the third with a pinch
hit single. The Rams forged the tying run in the top of the
fifth as second baseman Jen Cardarelli singled home Christine
Pedersen.
The battle then waged into extra innings, setting up the
controversial ending. URI centerfielder Robin Davies opened the
eighth with a liner past first baseman Nicki Shaner. Shaner,
3-4 in the game, was playing up, so the ball passed her in fair
territory, but appeared to everyone with the exception of the
home plate umpire to have gone foul prior to crossing over the
first base bag.
The result was Davies on second with a double. The next batter,
Sarah Villa, doubled Davies home with what proved to be the
eventual winning run.
"When I talked to the team I said we had a lot of runners on
base, alot of opportunities to score runs, and if we score the
runs then that on call does not cost us the game," stated
Wieners.

Eagles improve to 9-11
April 7, 1999
Chestnut Hill, Mass- Boston College moved two games closer to the
five hundred mark with two wins over the University of Rhode
Island, in action Tuesday afternoon at Shea field.
In game one each team had six hits, with BC led by sophomore
Summer Jarratt(Manhattan Beach, CA) with two hits, two RBI and
two runs scored.
Junior Gretchen Thompson (Brea, CA)picked up her team leading
fourth win of the season. Thompson pitched a complete game,
allowing two runs on six hits including a season-high 11
strikeouts.
In game two,the Eagles(9-11) exploded for 11 runs on 15 hits.
Junior Cristin Brown(Playa Del Rey, CA) went a perfect 4-4 at the
plate with a run scored. BC scored all the runs they would need
in the bottom of the fourth, when two runs came across to give BC
an early 2-0 lead.
Boston College blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth when
junior Chris Vicari(Totowa, NJ) hit a grand slam, which capped a
nine-run inning for the Eagles, giving them the 11-1 victory.

Apr 18, 1999 (Game #41): Dayton - away
From UD's Web Page ...
The University of Dayton softball team split a doubleheader with
the University of Rhode Island today, losing the first game by a
score of 5-3 in eleven innings and winning the second game by a
score of 2-0.
In the first game it was Sara Hatcher (Bellefontine, OH) going
the distance for the Flyers as she allowed the Rams fifteen hits
in the eleven innings that she pitched. With the score tied at
3-3 in the top of the eleventh Rhode Island took advantage of a
tired Hatcher and scored two runs to seal the victory. Kerry
White (Springfield, OH) went 3 for 6 with 1 RBI and Jennifer
Payne (Indianapolis, IN) went 2 for 5 with 1 RBI, provided the
offensive punch for the Flyers.
In the second game Dayton scored one run in the first inning and
never looked backed. Karen Hill (7-3) (Brown City, MI) allowed
the Rams only five hits while leaving six Rhode Island runners on
base. Joy Christopher (Oak Park, IL) and Hatcher both went 2 for
3 respectively from the plate as Hatcher drove in the winning run
in the first, on a double that scored Christopher.

Apr 28, 1999 (Game #49): Hartford - away
From UofH's Web Page ...
West Hartford, CT -- The University of Hartford softball team
ended its four game losing streak with a pair of wins over the
University of Rhode Island at Al-Marzook Field Tuesday afternoon.
The Hawks took game one by a score of 4-1 and took the nightcap
by an 8-6 margin.
Liz Nadeau (Woburn, MA) dominated the first game, holding the
Rams hitless for 6 1/3 innings while facing the minimum number of
batters over that span. Nadeau allowed only an unearned run in
the seventh as she tossed her second one-hitter of the season.
Senior catcher Kristine Hewitt (Haverstraw, NY) led Hartford
offensively, with a pair of hits and an RBI. The Hawks scored a
pair of runs in the second inning and added insurance runs in the
fifth on RBI's by Hewitt and sophomore Abbey Toich (Hicksville,
NY).
Game two saw the Hawks jump out to an 8-2 lead and hold on for
an 8-6 victory. The Hawks scored one in the first, three in the
second and four in the fourth inning to build the commanding
lead. Hartford took advantage of seven Rhode Island errors. The
Rams got back into the game due to Hartford errors, plating four
runs in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 8-6. All of Rhode
Island's runs were unearned. Junior Johanna Boisselle (Somerset,
MA) earned her fifth win of the year while Sue Dvorak (Levittown,
NY) struck the only two batters she faced to notch her second
save. Senior Tammy Jaworoski (Stamford, CT) had a single, double
and triple on the day while junior Jenn Vuolo (Madison, CT) was 2
for 4 with two runs batted in.

History
The 1999 season, for home games only, spanned 27 days,
from Apr 08th - May 4th.
The 1998 season, for home games only, spanned 34 days,
from Mar 25th - Apr 27th.
1998: After playing around the .500 mark most of
the season, things went bad at the end as they lost eight out
of nine. They lost two to St. Joseph's on April 27th, needing
only one win to make the A-10 playoffs. They lost both games,
1-0. What heart breakers.
The 1997 season, for home games only, spanned just 30 days.
