REMOVE THE "BUILD ID" FROM US VERSION OF MOZILLA'S TITLE BAR
While Mozilla was in its rather extensive beta testing period, the "Build ID" shown in the title bar didn't bug me much. After all, new builds were released regularly and an army of testers were reporting bugs back to the good folks at Mozilla. However, many people that are not beta testers are presently using the release version of Mozilla and yet the Build ID number remains in the title bar for all to see. Some of us find this distracting. If you feel the same way, you might find this useful.
You can do it yourself by manually editing a file in your Mozilla/chrome sub-directory called en-US.jar, or you can simply download a pre-edited version and relpace your standard file (back it up before replacing it).
If you prefer to do this manually, you can try the following somewhat fiddly steps:
- Launch Windows Explorer and find your Mozilla proram directory. Open the chrome sub-directory and find a file called en-US.jar (you may need to change Explorer's settings so that file extensions are shown). Save a copy of en-US.jar in a safe place.
- Use an archiving software to extract locale\en-US\navigator-title.dtd to a temporary directory for editing.
- Find the extracted file \navigator-title.dtd, highlight it, press and hold the Shift key, right-click it and select Open with.... Make sure that the Always use this program to open these files box is UN-checked and select Notepad from the list.
- Now find and delete the two occurences of {&buildid.label;}. Leave the rest of the line containing {&buildid.label;}, just remove that part specific of each line.
- Replace the navigator-title.dtd file in the archive (double-check it to make sure the edited version has been added and replaced the old file, with the full path).
Kudos to lord.hypnos at the Ars Software Colloquium for the tip.
Go_Moz: A SCRIPT FOR IE5+ AND MOZILLA USERS
Go_Moz is a simple, free script by Steve Yandl for those of you that use both Internet Explorer 5+ and Mozilla when you browse, as I do. If you've ever wished you could open a link from Internet Explorer in Mozilla, Go_Moz is for you. Once configured (read the ReadMe file for easy instructions), you can right-click any link in Internet Explorer and open it in Mozilla.
Go_Moz is the perfect script for you ambi-browseral (bi-browseral?) power surfers out there. Go_Moz works in Win9x, WinME, WinNTx, Win2K and WinXP. As with all scripts available here at The Gazette, you must have the Windows Scripting Host installed and functioning. Also, if you use the latest versions of Norton Anti Virus, you may have to change settings to allow scripts to run.
