More often than not, if song times are listed they are actually track times, not
necessarily the true length of the song.
FYI, you may notice that all listings below for IAGDVida's w/ times are
indexed oddly; pre drum solo, drum solo, post drum solo. I did this
because I hate drum solos and it allows me to easily skip over them.
To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure how I even got around to compiling this
list, as I can't really say I'm a fan of Iron Butterfly. Though I like
some of their music, my interest in them is nowhere near the level that it
would need to be to drive the average person to compile a list of performances.
I honestly just don't understand why I did this.

Zeppelin opened for them at these shows and at least on Jan-31 received such a
ositive response from the crowd that Iron Butterfly decided not to go on, though
I'm not sure what the final outcome was. I can fully sympathize with IB, as Zep
was on fire at this point and was certainly a more engaging group and already
had a more exciting setlist than IB. Nothing against IB, but I would have certainly
rather seen Zeppelin.
Have you ever noticed how similar IB's and LZ's names are? Both refer to flying
forms of metal.
"I was at the famous IB/Led Zep (their debut, of course) show at the Fillmore East in NY.
At the time, I was a fairly regular attendee to the Fillmore, and I always collected
(and still have) some of their handbills which listed upcoming shows. I don't recall
The Move ever being listed on the bill. I seem to remember that for a brief time
(perhaps in the very first listing of the show) the opening act for IB was listed as
the "New Yardbirds" which, of course, was Zeppelin's early name. After that, the bill
listed only Iron Butterfly and Led Zeppelin. Fillmore's shows were always at 8pm and 11pm
on Friday and Saturday. I know I went to one of the early shows, but I'm not sure which
day. I've read various reports of the audience walking out after Zeppelin, or IB refusing
to go on, but to my knowledge, none of that occurred to the extent it was reported.
At the show I attended, it looked like about 1/3 or less of the audience left before IB
came on, most of them slightly older than I was (in 68 I was 15), who no doubt had come
just based on the word of mouth about Page's new band. I think prior to that show,
Zeppelin had only played one show in Boston. I hope that helps."
Phillippe LaVere
"There were 2 shows each night; 8.30 pm and 11.00 or 11.30 pm, depending on the venue.
A typical warm-up act would usually play about 30 min, with a 1 song encore.
The main act would usually come on around 9.45 pm and play for 50 min (two
25 min sets, with a 10 min break in between). The Fillmore had a capacity of
about 3,000 or so. The first shows on Friday were always about half-full, but the late
shows were generally sold-out or 90% full.
Everybody thought Zeppelin was from California. They had no following at all, and Iron
Butterfly was big. Both bands were under Atlantic Records, Zeppelin (Atlantic) and Butterfly
(ATCO). What I remember is, the first night Friday, both bands played well for the first show.
The second show went on around midnight and ended around 2.30 am Though I'm a Zeppelin
fan, both bands were pretty equal on the first night. After every late show, most of the fans
hung out in front of the Fillmore, waiting for the bands to come out.
The Move (a British rock band) though scheduled, did not play. I'm note sure why, it could have
been a better gig or a dispute over fee. Bill Graham was notorious for not paying opening acts.
He felt they should be thankful for just being on the bill. Like I said, the first night Zeppelin and
Butterfly played equally well.
The truth about the Saturday show:
1 A black gospel group called "Porter's Popular Preachers" were the first warm-up act before
Zeppelin. A bizarre act, as about 8 to 10 people wearing black robes with white undergarments
performed.
2 I did not hear their act, as I was out front at the door.
3 Zeppelin was to (and did) follow next.
4 Saturday early shows were almost always sold out. This one was, because Butterfly had a huge
following in lower New York. They had been at the Fillmore a couple of times in 68', and were
great, that's why Bill Graham always had them there.
The Saturday show got off late, w/ "Porter's Popular Preachers" starting late and Zeppelin
was slow getting it going and did not start at the scheduled 8:50 pm. Zeppelin played extremely loud for the capacity crowd, and they went very
long in their set. The had the crowd going. Though I was up front at the door near the
admission area, I can remember the place going crazy. The biggest problem that night was that
Atlantic Records had a truck load of people there, trying to run the place. They were there for
Zeppelin, and tried to take control. Our general manager Chris (last name?) was freaking out
because they overtook the front area near the left side of the stage. Usually the headliner
would close the show with around 10.30 pm, and it would take about a half-hour to clear out the
3,500 capacity theatre, so we could get ready for the second show that would start at 11.30 pm.
This night was different. As Zeppelin went well past 10:00 pm, it was apparent that
there wouldn't be enough time left for Butterfly to do their complete set, usually the
headliner would play for about 50 min. Remember, we still had an 11:30 pm show to do, with about
3,500 people outside in the street, on a frigid January night. As Zeppelin's show went on
(according to bootleg recordings), they played "How Many More Times", then Bonham went into
an extended drum solo, which brought the house down."

69-Feb-1: Erik Braunn appears on American Bandstand - Los Angeles, CA (bcast date)
69-Feb-2: Massey Hall - Toronto, Canada w/ The Turtles
(excerpt fr a Toronto newspaper review by Ritchie Yorke, which was mainly geared towards Zeppelin's show at Rock Pile the same evening)
Iron Butterfly, who appeared at the Rock Pile three months ago, seemed slightly inhibited
by the Massey Hall environment. And so did the audience. Perhaps it was because we'd
seen the group before, complete with light show and the unique Rock Pile atmosphere.
Iron Butterfly prominently featured cuts from its new Atco album, Ball, complete with
tinkly sound effects, as in Soul Experience. Its best song, by far, was In-a-Gadda-da-Vida,
played faster than we'd heard previously, but with less vitality. The vocal was lost in an
annoying sound hangup. It was a show that never really got off the ground. It was
interesting without being involving, technically good but emotionally unrewarding.

Led Zeppelin was paid $50,000, and Iron Butterfly was paid $8,000.
Iron Butterfly songs included: Soul Experience, In The Times Of Our Lives and
In A Gadda Davida. A decent but realtively dull performance.
As per Winnipeg Free Press, Led Zeppelin was awful, Robert Plant blamed it on the sound system.
Other bands included The Youngbloods, Ides Of March and Chilliwack.

3 My Mirage Ingle.......... 4.55 Ingle
4 Termination.......... 2.53 Braunn, Dorman
5 Are You Happy.......... 4.29 Ingle
6 In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.......... 17.05 Ingle
Notes: With its endless, droning minor-key riff and mumbled vocals, "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" is arguably
the most notorious song of the acid rock era. According to legend, the group was so stoned when they
recorded the track that they could neither pronounce the title "In the Garden of Eden" or end the track,
so it rambles on for a full 17 minutes, which to some listeners sounds like eternity. But that's the
essence of its appeal -- it's the epitome of heavy psychedelic excess, encapsulating the most indulgent
tendencies of the era. Iron Butterfly never matched the warped excesses of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," either on
their debut album of the same name or the rest of their catalog, yet they occasionally made some enjoyable
fuzz guitar-driven psychedelia that works as a period piece. The five tracks that share space with their
magnum opus on In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida qualify as good artifacts, and the entire record still stands as the
group's definitive album, especially since this is the only place the full-length title track is available.

9 Belda-Beast.......... 5.50 Braunn
10 ..Deceive You, Little Girl.......... 3.34 Ingle
11 To Be Alone.......... 3.05 Edmondson, Ingle
Notes: Following the huge success of their second record, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, Iron Butterfly scored a
second straight Top Five album with Ball. While it didn't have any acid rock freak-out to compare with
the epic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", Ball was a more ambitious album, as the group experimented with shorter,
more melodic songs. Like any Iron Butterfly album, the quality of the material is wildly inconsistent,
yet cut for cut, Ball is a more consistent album than their two previous records, as the group trimmed
away some of the acid rock excesses of their earlier records while retaining their brutally loud
trademark heavy guitars.

Notes: On Ball, Iron Butterfly began to expand its sound, attempting to write more concisely.
On Metamorphosis, the group continued its musical explorations, adding a layered production
to its sound. This ambition, highlighted by a handful of strong tracks, particularly the single
"Easy Rider" makes for an interesting listen, since Iron Butterfly's albums can be weighed down
by their relentless heaviness.
