Eagle Scout Stats: Only 2% of those who join Boy Scouts make Eagle Scout. Over 1.2 million young men have made Eagle since Scouting was founded in America in 1910. Famous Eagles include: Gerald Ford, Steven Spielberg, Neil Armstrong, John Tesh and James Lovell. The two banner Eagle Scout years were: 1973 when 46,966 boys earned Eagle awards and 1999 when 47,582 earned Eagle awards. 1973 was was a transition year when requirements were changing and everything for any rank had to be completed by the end of Dec 1973, except for Boards Of Review. This is one reason there were so many Eagles in 1973 and early 1974. I myself completed all but the BOR for Eagle in early Dec 1973 and my BOR was in Jan 1974.
