PINEWOOD DERBY CAR

SPECIFICATIONS

Pinewood Derby Car Specifications: All racers, regardless of division, must comply with the following racing specifications:

 

· Old Rules do not apply after 06/01/2006.

· The car must be newly built for the current Cub Scouting year with all the components contained in the B.S.A. kit catalog #17006 or later

· Width: Overall width shall not exceed 2 3/4".

· Length: Overall length shall not exceed 7".

· Weight: Finished car can not weigh more than 5 ounces (141.75 grams). Cars will not be accepted if their weight exceeds five (5) ounces by even the smallest resolution of the balance. The weight shown on the Official Race Scale is final.

· The car must have 1 3/4 inches inside wheel to wheel to fit on the track. (The original block in the kit provides this dimension.)

· All car parts and materials must be firmly attached. To increase the car's weight, add wood or metal only.

· Wheels & Axles: Use only Official Scout Grand Prix wheels and axles. You can polish the axles. You may lightly sand the wheels to remove the molding seam on the tread. Ribs on sidewall must remain totally visible and the tire tread must remain square on a flat surface. No other wheel changes are allowed. Washers and bushings are prohibited.

· Lubrication: Use dry powdered Axle Lube (BSA Item #17106) ONLY. You may not use any other lubricant, especially oils and silicone sprays. No graphite may be used. (Please note that after 06/1/2006 only BSA Pinewood Derby® Axle Lube will be

allowed.)

· Springing: The car shall not ride on any type springs.

· Details: Details such as steering wheel, driver, decals, painting, or interior detail are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, and width specifications.

· The car must be freewheeling with no starting devices. (Nose of the block of wood must rest on starting gate. Cars that overlap will be run backwards.)

· A car that has been accepted at the pack level will be inspected at the district and council races and may be disqualified if it is determined not to meet published specifications.

· Inspection: Each Car must pass inspection by the race day Pinewood Derby Committee before it may compete. Inspection for district and council races will take place the day of the race. (Schedule date & time of district to be determined later). Council race will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2007 at Scouting 360.

· A Cub Scout whose car fails any part of the inspection will be given the opportunity to make adjustments to the car. Cars will be reweighed, measured, and inspected up to 3 times with new stock wheels if applicable or until the scheduled race starting time, which

ever comes first.

· After the car has passed inspection, it will be taken by a race official to the pit table to await the race. Cars may not be handled except by race officials after inspection until the race is completed.

· In the event of a breakdown of a car during the race, the participant may make an attempt to repair the car trackside, as long as the repair takes less than five minutes. The car must pass inspection and weighing prior to another attempt to race. If the car can not be repaired trackside, the car is disqualified.

· A car that jumps off the track or interferes with another car will be allowed to rerun

the heat. If the same car jumps off the track or interferes with another a second time, the participant may elect to race the car backwards. A car that jumps off the track or interferes with another car three times will be disqualified.

· District committees may enter up to 16 cars in the GCC Pinewood Derby championship. District committees will determine which cars from their district are eligible to race in the Council Pinewood championship not to exceed four cars in each category: Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos.

· District will be responsible for presenting a list of eligible racers prior to the registration deadline for the GCC championship race. Entrants not listed on the district list will not be eligible to race.

· District committees will establish and announce the registration time schedule for the District Pinewood Derby elimination. This schedule will be presented in writing no later that the February Roundtable Meeting.

· No registrations will be accepted after the published deadlines. Scouts in line for registration before the deadline will be accepted.

· It is the responsibility of the car owner to present the car on the day of the race.

· No walk-in registrations will be accepted at GCC Pinewood Derby championship.

· GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP AND BEHAVIOR IS EXPECTED. Race officials may ask anyone not following the rules to leave and the participant’s car will be disqualified. The determination of the race committee is final.

· THE COUNCIL FINALS ARE SCHEDULED FOR MAY 5, 2007 AT THE COUNCIL SCOUTING 360 AT THE CUYAHOGA
