A liveaboard trip to the Andaman Sea and Mergui Archipelago off the western coast of Thailand and Burma (now known as Myanmar) is my dream dive trip.  Hopefully, I will be able to go one day.  This page serves as both as source of information and motivation to me.

The Mergui Archipelago is a chain of over 800 islands in the Andaman Sea off western Thailand and Burma.  Most are in pristine condition as they have never been dove.  Many are too far from populated towns to be reached by day boats.  This = GREAT DIVING!

You must depart from Phuket or Ranong, both in extreme southern Thailand.  Forget leaving from Burma.  It has a bizarre isolationist government.  Phuket is a major tourist island, with an international airport and it is easy to get to from Bangkok by air and other major Asian airports.  Ranong is a little further north than Phuket, so a departure from there maximizes time in the northern and more remote reaches of the archipelago.  Popular island chains to dive include the Similan and Surin chains.  Sharks are often seen.  In the Burmese waters they are more common than people.  You may also encounter Moken sea gypsies.  The dive season runs from November thru May.

bulletAmericans who visit Thailand do not need a visa if they stay under 30 days for tourism.  A fee of $100 - $160 is collected upon crossing into Burmese waters and must be paid in crisp American dollars.  Get the $ before you leave home!
bulletDon't forget to keep Thai currency, called Bhat, to depart the Thai international airport.  The departure fee is B500 (about $20) and must be paid in cash in Thai currency.
bulletWater temperature is 80-85F all year.  There is a hyperbaric chamber in Phuket, but it's a long haul from the northern Mergui.
