Tips for Running Safety from The Road Runner's Club of America - Write down or leave word of the direction of your run. - Carry a cell phone or change for a phone call. - Carry a noisemaker or pepper spray (get trained in the use of the latter). - Carry identification. Include any important medical information. - Wear reflective material if you run before dawn or after dusk. - Do not wear jewelry. - Do not wear headphones. Use your ears to be aware of your surroundings. - Run with a partner. - Run in familiar areas. Alter your route pattern. - In unfamiliar areas, contact a local Road Runners Club of America running club or a local running store. - Always stay alert. The more aware you are, the less vulnerable you are. - Ignore verbal harassment. Use discretion in acknowledging strangers. - Look directly at others and be observant, but keep your distance and keep moving. - Use your intuition about a person or an area; avoid if you are unsure. - Practice memorizing license tags or identifying characteristics of strangers. - CALL POLICE IMMEDIATELY if something happens to you or someone else, or if you notice anyone out of the ordinary. |
