After receiving his AA from Southwestern Community College, he transferred to California State University, Long Beach, to study sculpture. There he received training in foundry work, figurative sculpture and mold making. He earned his BFA in sculpture and, after a brief stint in the animation industry, was fortunate to come into contact with a group of talented working sculptors with vast experience in commercial art. Not only were David's skills in sculpture and mold making further enhanced by his mentors, he also learned how to design works for production.
