Carey fashions knives with fire, anvil, and hammer that are designed for the man who wants a companion that will be a trusted friend wherever his travels may take him.  These knives are forged from various high carbon steels, hardened, and tempered so that they will perform in the most demanding situations.  Although each knife follows a pattern every one is a unique piece.  Each knife comes with a high quality leather sheath and both come with a lifetime limited warranty.

With each knife I forge, my number one goal is to make it as though I were making it for myself.  That assures you as a customer that each knife is the finest cutting tool that I can produce.  These knives are not always the completely flawless masterpieces that you often see in collector cases and that you're afraid to use because you might scratch them.  These knives are designed to be used as the tools they are.  There may be the occasional flaw that simply says that this piece was not made on a jig in a machine but by hand.  Because your knife is unique, there is a pride of ownership that is unknown with a mass produced item, it becomes a part of your history to be passed down to loved ones and to be admired as an heirloom by generations yet unborn .

Rather than try to be all things to all people, I have decided to concentrate on several styles of knife that I have found to be most useful to me through the years.  I think you will find that one of these styles will also fill your needs as well.  If you have some special idea in mind, I will be happy to discuss it with you.

All knives come standard with black walnut, figured maple, or Osage orange scales that have been treated to withstand weather and other elements. Other types of natural and stabilized woods, bone, canvas, or linen micarta, various types of horn, antler, or other materials are also available to personalize your knife. The charge is determined by the material you choose.

My guarantee is simple.  Although I do test the occasional knife to destruction, these are knives not pry bars, screwdrivers, can openers...  I'm sure you get the idea.  Natural materials will sometimes shrink or crack.  Speak to Mother Nature about this.  The knives I make are guaranteed to rust if you leave them covered with blood and guts and put it back in the sheath until you get ready to use them again.  You will probably wash up when you get through using your knife, wash, dry, and lightly oil your knife while you are at it.  I guarantee that, if used and treated with the care you would give any fine tool, I will repair or replace any knife that fails due to defects in materials or workmanship for as long as I am able to make knives.  This guarantee is also extended to the sheath that accompanies your knife.  They're tough but they do need some care.

Current delivery time is usually eight to twelve weeks.

Thank you for choosing one of my knives.  May you use it in good health.

Forge Welded Cable Damascus

      Forge Welded Cable Damascus

I can fashion any of these knives in forge welded cable damascus.  This is a very long and labor intensive process.  There are no power hammers or anything of that sort in my shop and I just don’t feel anyone else will work the metal like I think it should be done so it’s all done with a 2 to 4 pound hammer, lots of heat, time, sweat, the occasional aggravating occlusion that must be thrown out, the accompanying deleted expletive, and loving care.  Delivery time goes up because the cable will not be hurried.  Prices start a $125.00 an inch with a $400.00 minimum.  If you are interested in one of these knives, please contact me and we will work it all out before we start on your knife.  At the present time, I do not offer pattern welded damascus.

Period Pieces

Period Pieces

I occasionally come across a fine old carbon steel kitchen knife that is past its prime that I am able to use to make a new "old knife".  Sometimes I start with an old file or a piece of a plow or most anything that a frontier blacksmith might have pulled out of his junk pile to use to make a knife.  These make great pieces for use in any number of ways.  Reinactors love them because they are very close to what our forefathers used when settling this country.  I will be happy to use your design or mine.  Prices usually range between $50.00 and $100.00.  Extra large or fancy designs like the one shown will be more.

I'm always amused when some reinactor tells me that a piece is not quite "period accurate".  If it were up to people like him, the industrial revolution would probably be waiting to happen because change wouldn't be "period accurate".  Small changes become trends and then new ways of doing things.  Do you think that Jim Bowie really cared that his new knife wasn't "period accurate"?
