Six singles, two tapes

While driving around in Kenner (a suburb of New Orleans) waiting for LensCrafters to finish my glasses, I happened upon a Goodwill I'd never been to before on Esplanade Boulevard. Pretty boring place, but for some reason they had tons of 45s for 49 cents a piece. Here are the ones I took home, plus two cassettes:

01. Tommy James and the Shondells - Crystal Blue Persuasion b/w I'm Alive (Roulette - 1969)

CBP is a great song from James' 1968 album "Crimson and Clover", which also features the like-titled stab at flanged-out psychedelia.

02. Jimmy Cliff - Wonderful World, Beautiful People b/w Waterfall (A&M - 1969/70?)

Two big hits on one disc from the roots reggae legend. The first is a bright, bouncy, uptempo affair with touches of bittersweet strings and choir vocals. The second is some poppy Tom Jones shiz - not reggae at all, kinda sappy, but still quite catchy.

03. The Honey Cone - Want Ads b/w We Belong Together (Hot Wax - 1969)

You remember the song... Gonna put it in the want ads! Oooo! Poppy female soul.

04. Tin Tin - Toast and Marmalade for Tea b/w Manhattan Woman (Atco - 1970)

I bought this for two reasons: I'd never heard of Tin Tin, and the Atco label reminded me of my beloved pre-disco Bee Gees singles. And hey, what d'ya know? These guys sound exactly like the pre-disco Bee Gees! And these songs were produced by Maurice Gibb of the pre- (and post-) disco Bee Gees! And they're pretty good!

05. Booker T. and the MG's  - Jellybread b/w Aw' Mercy (Stax - 1963/4/5?)

Gritty southern soul from the Stax house band. Both of these tracks are uptempo, bluesy instrumentals and both contain their fair share of hott, dirty solos. These two songs appear on an album called "Soul Dressing" which mostly contains singles from 1963 to 1965, so I'm guessing this came out at some point during those three years...

06. Bee Gees - Run to Me b/w Road to Alaska (Atco - 1972)

You should know by now that I pick up any pre-disco Bee Gees. It's good stuff, people! Both of these songs are from the album "To Whom It May Concern", and both of them are just swell.

07. Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians - Perspex Island (A&M - 1991)

Sealed cassette album from the Soft Boys frontman. Contains college radio hit "So You Think You're In Love". It's no Fegmania!, but it'll do.

08. Robyn Hitchock and the Egyptians - Gotta Let This Hen Out! (Relativity - 1985)

Live recording from the Marquee in London on April 27, 1985. Robyn and his men tear ass on this tape - making it better, in my opinion, than most of their studio albums. In addition to faves such as "Sometimes I Wish I Was a Pretty Girl" and "Brenda's Iron Sledge", they whip out three of the best Soft Boys songs EVER - "Leppo and the Jooves", "Kingdom of Love", and "Only the Stones Remain". If you're thinking to yourself, "Say, all of those songs rock pretty hard," you're right - and this is indicative of the whole concert: tense, energetic, powerful and catchy as tits.
