01. Mario Quiz Cards

From the heart of America's Thrift Store and straight into your rods and cones comes this box set of Mario Quiz Cards for 99 cents. Featuring colorful original illustrations and a hot licensing property (Mario and pals), the cards themselves pose multiple-choice kiddy questions which are answered in condensed encyclopedia blurbs on the reverse side (which I didn't bother to scan because they're boring.) Here are four examples of card fronts that I picked out mainly for the art:
On this card, a Lakitu-spawned Spiny offers three answers for a question that has haunted mankind since the dawn of time. Yeah, it's number 3. Sources at Nintendo claim that Mario was playing the solo in the middle of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" while posing for this drawing. Here, Princess Peach (or Toadstool, depending on the game) flings away a short skirt, appalled that she would even be asked to wear such a thing. God forbid she show a little skin that isn't on her face or neck. I thought the answer was the 1950s, but apparently the authors of these cards count skirts that are only high enough to show a woman's ankles as "short" because they say it's the 1920s. "4. Two Italian plumbers." But I kid. The answer is 3. I don't know who they're trying to kid here. For Nintendo to pose the question "What is a mushroom?" and not include "Magical items (found in floating blocks) that slide around of their own accord on flat surfaces upon being released and which, if eaten, cause a person to grow larger or allow them to die and come back to life" as an answer is just plain wrong.
02. HULA PIG
I dunno. This is one of those spring-loaded "dancing" figurines you're supposed to stick on the dashboard of your 1976 station wagon. On one hand, it's tacky as hell and there's no way I'm putting in up in my car. On the other hand, it's tacky as hell, interesting enough to put up somewhere in my place, and incorporates Easter basket "grass" in a novel way. Oh, and it was 99 cents at ATS.
03. Atari Jaguar joypad
Picked up for a buck fifty at ATS, here's the Jaguar joypad that wasn't included with the Jaguar system I found the other day at the very same store. At least Red White & Blue tries to include the proper cables and controllers with their console systems... but y'know, I really can't complain; at least they had one. Still no luck on the AV or power cables, though.
