The Heironimus store at Jefferson St. & Church Ave. was one of the most popular department stores in Roanoke. It included four full floors of merchandise, and a basement floor with appliances and "seconds", clothing items with small flaws which were sold at a discount. Also, there was a connecting doorway to the S & W Cafeteria next door. As you went through this exit, you would be tempted by a candy and nuts area with Martha Washington Candies and hot salted cashews.

Originally, shows cast in New York would travel around to the various locations to perform. Actors would sometimes wait tables as they lived on the premises during a show's run.
