2008-09 Varsity Team Season OutlookLooking to build upon last year’s second place finish in a very competitive Channel League, the 08-09 Royals squad has set its sights high. After the most successful season in recent memory, the Royals are hungry to improve even more and compete for first place in Channel League. San Marcos has been placed in Division 3AA for CIF playoff competition and hopes to play deep into February. Leading the way is 6'4" Senior shooting guard and team captain Nick Marquez. A Channel League First Team Selection, Nick was the leading scorer on a 20-8 team that won two tournaments and hosted two CIF playoff home games. Nick is a versatile scorer, able to finish with both hands, shoot the three and pull up with the mid-range jumper. He's also improved his defense, finishing second on the team in steals last season. He was selected to the All Tournament Teams at Coast Union and Armijo while finishing second in the county in three point makes and percentage at just under 40%. Nick had a spectacular 18 point 10 rebound effort against Leuzinger High School in the first round of the CIF playoffs that netted him Athlete of the Week from the Santa Barbara News Press. Nick has been an all tournament selection in the Coast Union Tournament this season where he averaged 18 points per game and was the Most Valuable Player in the Jim Bashore Holiday Cage Classic at Carpinteria High School where he led the Royals to the championship while scoring 22 points per game. The team will look to Nick for leadership on both ends of the court this season. 6’2” Senior forward and team captain Chris Vines will play his second season on Varsity and has the potential to be one of the leagues leading rebounders. With an improved long range jumper, Chris will look to spread the court when defenses collapse in addition to penetrating the paint and scoring with the drive. Chris has always been a defensively minded player who thrives on the challenge of guarding the opponent's leading scorer. Chris had a dominating performance against El Segundo to help send the Royals to the third place game in the San Luis Obispo Kiwanis de Tolosa Tournament with 22 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists while holding the opponent's leading scorer to eleven below his average. Chris was selected to the All Tournament Team at both the San Luis Obispo Kiwanis de Tolosa Tournament and the Jim Bashore Holiday Cage Classic where he led the team in rebounds at just under 9 per game and scored 14 points, including 2 for 3 from behind the arc. The team will look to Chris for leadership emotionally and on the defensive end of the court. 5'8" Senior point guard Christian Rios is lightning quick in transition and pressures the ball better than anyone else on the team. Strong with the ball, Christian loves to involve his teammates with his unselfish play but has increased confidence in his ability to hit the big shot. Extremely active on the defensive end of the court, Christian will be one of the team leaders in charges taken, steals and will dive on loose balls to obtain possession. Look for Christian and Bryant to share the point guard duties. 6'1" Senior forward Addison Day is well rounded player with an improved long range shot. Addison prides himself in playing hard-nosed defense and being in the right position to help his teammates. One of the football teams best receivers the past two seasons, Addison is a quintessential team player. Look for Addison to hit the open shot and provide energy and spirit on the defensive end. 6'5" Senior center Michael Goldsholl is a savvy post player and improved help defender. Adept at shooting the hook shot, Michael has also shown the ability to knock down the jumper and block shots from helpside. Look for Michael to make strong post moves and rebound the ball on the defensive end. 6'2" Senior forward Andrew Grimes will play his first season on Varsity after a three year hiatus from the sport. A standout volleyball player each season on Varsity, Andrew is a terrific athlete with a good vertical leap. Andrew has shown the ability to hit the open shot, rebound in traffic and set hard screens. Look for him to provide energy and enthusiasm on the court. 5’9” Junior point guard Bryant Koopmans returns with valuable experience in his second year on Varsity. Adept at penetrating and finding his teammates with crisp passes, Bryant has also worked hard on his jump shot. One of the team's best free throw shooters, Bryant has also become more aggressive on both ends of the court. Bryant was selected to the All Tournament Team at the Coast Union Tournament where he led the team in assists at 5 per game and averaged 10 points. Look for Bryant to initiate our offense, break opposing team's presses, spread the court with his shooting ability and find open teammates. 6'6" Junior center Josh Guild is a new addition to the Royals. Blessed with a soft release and good range on his jumper, Josh has worked hard to become stronger and faster. His rebounding has improved as have his defense and decision making skills. Look for Josh to improve his moves around the basket, hit the open jumper and crash the boards on both ends of the court. 5'11" Junior shooting guard Ryley Johnson was one of the leading scorers from the Junior Varsity team last season. Adept at shooting the three, Ryley is also a capable ball handler and an exceptional help defender. He is one of the team's best free throw shooters and often the quickest down the court. Look for Ryley to spread the court with his long range shooting ability, run the court in transition and hit his free throws. 6'0" Junior shooting guard Shane Moore has a deft shooting touch and is quick off the dribble. Shane is also an improved defender and has shown the ability to drive to the basket and score. Shane scored 11 points, including back to back threes, in a come from behind victory against El Segundo. Look for Shane to spread the court and drive, knock down the trey and aggressively defend the ball. 6'0" Junior wing JP Dodson is an aggressively minded offensive player. He instinctively hunts the paint and is adept at getting defenders in the air and drawing fouls. He has improved his shooting ability both from range and at the free throw line. Look for JP to improve his defense, attack the basket and get to the free throw line where he should rank high on the team in attempts and makes. 6'1" Junior forward James Crook returns with valuable leadership experience as starting quarterback for the Varsity football team. James is a capable outside shooter, a strong defender and hard-nosed competitor. Look for James to play at both forward positions, spread the court with his shooting ability and provide strong defense in the post and on the perimeter. 6'4" Sophomore center Christian Mkpado will strengthen the Royals' frontcourt this season. The strongest player on the team, Christian thrives on contact and physical play. Well versed in the use of fakes, Christian finishes well around the basket and is an improved free throw shooter. He also uses his body well to prevent opposing post players from sealing and obtaining low post positions. Christian has worked hard the past two seasons to improve his speed and explosiveness and it has paid off. Look for Christian to be one of our leading rebounders this season. 6'0" Sophomore guard Zach Yinger will look to gain experience playing his first season on Varsity. Blessed with a strong body, Zach has worked hard to improve all aspects of his game including ball handling, defense and shooting. Zach has done a great job utilizing fakes in his game and has shown the ability to score in the paint. Look for Zach to play some at the point and shooting guard positions.
