"The Magical and Wonderful Doc...." 





He is my friend, my child, my brother and sometimes my parent. When we're together there is a magical feeling I can't explain. Once, as I did my chores in tears after losing our dog, Randi. Doc came to me, stayed by my side, nuzzling me and licking my hands until I stopped crying, only when I walked back to the house did he leave my side. He is so in tune to my thoughts and moods that sometimes it's a little scary.
He is beautiful , intelligent, assertive, confident, opinionated, playful and a bit of a prankster but when I need him to be strong and caring,  he always comes through.
 To think that we almost lost him because of Navicular Syndrome/Disease.
Five years ago he was limping almost every day. He was so lame and in so much pain that we were actually considering putting him down. It all seems like a bad dream now.





 
            
Fly, my dearest friend.
Your hooves barely touch the grass,
You float above the ground,
Ecstatic with that new freedom you have found.

 Fly, my dearest friend,
The pain is but a memory now.
Your eyes are full of life and joy
As you perform yourAirs above the Ground
The movements yours, and yours alone.

 Fly, my dearest friend,
Your ebony mane and tail flow free,
Rear, buck and leap, my wondrous Doc.
Make up for those days that you could barely walk.

 But remember, my dearest friend,
When you tire of racing with the wind,
When your imaginary foes are vanquished,
I want just one kiss from that velvety nose.

After the article I wrote about Doc was published in The Horse's Hoof, we started receiving hundreds of e-mails, from all over the world. Desperate owners with navicular horses that they love and can't bear to watch suffer any more. They ask us if Doc is still sound, and if this method could work for their horses. The first thing I say to them is: do your own research.
Go to The Horse's Hoof , study that site,  there is tons of information there. Then if you are still interested,  purchase Dr. Strasser's books: A Lifetime of Soundness and Shoeing: A Necessary evil? Read them carefully.  You will know if this is right for you and your horse. It takes commitment, dedication and lots of love. This is not a band-aid solution. You will be reversing a process that took years to develop, you can't fix it overnight. The bottom line is Navicular can be cured and barefoot is the key. Dr. Strasser's method is not the only successful method in reversing navicular.
