******** Club News *********

Our club project went very well today, except for one thing. We predicted we would find the ring in 45 minutes and we were dead wrong...we found it in fourty minutes!!
Here are some pix of the guys who turned out for the hunt, all of us hunting and me handing the ring to Keith Rhodes right after I was fortunate enough to find it.
He was thrilled and could not believe our club showed up to help he and his wife locate her ring. BTW, the ring we found cost $6,000.00...so you can understand why they were so distressed at its loss. On a serviceman's salary, Keith said it would take him a long time to replace it..
Thanks again to all the guys who gave up their Sunday to do this.

***** Last Meeting Bulletin *****

Hello everyone,
For those of you who missed Danny Brown's presentation...you should have been there, it was super! Lots of veterans stories, artifacts and inside stories on conversations with famous W.W.II figures like Pappy Boyington of the Black Sheep Squadron. Danny also brought a model of a W.W.II bomber he made for a friend and what a piece that is. Rick Taggart will be sending out pix soon of Danny's Presentation. We had an excellent turnout and lots of very nice raffle prizes...Art Pourciau won the "coveted" U.S.N. teapot, Steve Wilhelm won the framed W.W.II covers, Laurie Bell won the Nazi Labor Day tinnie and Ron Perry won a ton of stuff as usual...and so did Rick Taggart. Reggie Simmons gave us an update on our club incorporation. As soon as it is filed at the Covington Court House we are "official". Next step is to apply with the I.R.S. as a 501 (c) (7) non profit, get our tax I.D. number and we are all set to go. We also paid for our insurance tonight, so we are set to go hunting. The insurance was $496.58 for one million dollars and that is quite a deal, thanks to Laurie Bell's good work. We also have $60.00 left over in the "Insurance Escrow Account" for next year's premium, so we are doing quite well. Some folks still have not paid their $15.00 insurance fee. Remember, if you want to go on future club hunts or attend the annual Huntnic you will have to pay your insurance fee. We had a brief report on our Public Service Project...we hope to do at least six a year. Our first was recovering the lost wedding ring for serviceman's wife in Mississippi this past Sunday. Laurie Bell has a friend who lost a gold coin in Katrina in the Buras area and has asked us to help find that. So, we will soon be asking for voulnteers to go look for that. Laurie will let us know when the lady cuts the grass and wants us to come.

***Monthly Raffle for July****

****Special Raffle****

Hello Everyone,
A couple members and board members asked of we were going to have any kind of "Special Raffle" this year like we did with the British Sword that was donated to the club last year. I had forgotten about that but.... it just so happens a friend of mine who I helped with a problem donated some items to our club to raffle off and help us raise money for the Huntnic. Considering what the items are it was a very generous gesture. All three pieces are antique Victorian Jewelry. ( See the attached pix )

The black piece of jewelry is carved " Jet" a black fossilized wood from which the term "Jet Black" originates. Women in mourning wore black Jet jewelry during their year of mourning for a lost loved one. It is a Victorian piece. You frequently see old photographs in albums or on the internet of women in mourning wearing this kind of Jet jewelry.
The Gold Locket with the genuine diamond is Marked 18 ct. It is also mourning jewelry worn after a formal period of mourning. It contained a lock of the "departed's" hair. This particular piece has the Widow's Husband's tooth inside... ( a joke O.K.? )..... Actually the glass back that would have sealed in the hair is missing but the pin is present and like the Jet piece it can be worn or displayed as is. The Cameo bracelet is either silver or silver plate hard to tell but the Cameo's are genuine carved shell and each one is different. They are in great condition and very pretty. It is a shame we don't have a jeweler in the club who could break this up into pins and earrings for us. Genuine antique Cameo's are very sought after to make pins, rings and such and command a pretty price. I would place a conservative value on all three pieces at about $400.00 to $500.00. Of course, just the gold and diamond piece would sell for that in an Antique shop. We will begin selling tickets for these pieces at the May meeting. The entire box will be awarded at the July meeting giving everyone 3 months to buy plenty of chances to win. All proceeds will be used to buy more prizes for the Huntnic. Anyone is eligible to buy tickets for these pieces whether you are at the meeting or not. And, you need not be present to win. If you or anyone in your family is interested in Victorian Jewelry, this is an opportunity to win 3 very nice pieces. They would make a nice Christmas present for a wife or girlfriend too, should you win.
