MINISTRY OF DIVINE HEALING
Healing ministry has always been a controversial subject in the Christian church. Today, with all of the tremendous advances in modern medicine, we have become dependent upon the doctors for all of our physical and psychological needs. Thank God for the medical profession, for their gifts, abilities and resources! However, a doctor friend of mine once made this statement, "doctors prescribe, but only God heals." Many Christian doctors pray for themselves and their patients before they do surgery. "Prayer therapy" is becoming more and more acceptable to the medical profession.
SCRIPTURES
In the Old Testament Exodus 15:26 states, "... / am the Lord who heals you." New Testament people have referred to Jesus as "the Great Physician." In Luke 13:32, even upon threat of death by Herod, Jesus was still quite emphatic about continuing to heal people, "... / will drive out demons and heal people today and tomorrow..." In Luke 10:9, as He commissioned the seventy disciples for ministry He said to them, "And heal the sick there, and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.'"
Matthew 6:14-15, " For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive you your trespasses." Forgiveness is necessary and very real. The devil knows it too and can trick us into believing that everything is okay when really it is not.
II Timothy 2:23-26 (KJV-ER). "But foolish and unlearned (ignorant) questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes (produce quarrels). And the servant of the Lord must not strive (quarrel); but be gentle to all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God perhaps will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; and that they may recover themselves out of the snare (noose-like trap) of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will"
James 5:14-16 gives specific details on how to pray for the sick. "Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed..."
HEALING THE WHOLE PERSON
Salvation is not only the healing of our spirits as we receive the good news of forgiveness. Healing is also for our bodies and souls. Anger and guilt from various hurts of the past, offenses and grudges, unforgiveness and bitterness which we carry around with us, often contribute to various kinds of illnesses, hurting not only us but also our relationships with other people. Good nutrition is also extremely important! The God who created us wants us to be whole!
