Raised Text

Start with any kind of fill you want. Here I used one of the preset wood fills from PI.

Press CTRL+D to duplicate the image, and then fill it with black. Type the words to which you will apply the cutout effect. Make the color white.
Press CTRL+C to copy the text to the clipboard. Merge the white text
to the background. Apply a Gaussian blur of 3. Use CTRL+V to paste
the text back into the document. Change the color to black and position
the text slightly down and to the right of the original. About like so:

Use CTRL+D to duplicate this image. Position the text this time slightly above and to the left.

Merge the text in both documents and then change the Data Type to Grayscale in the Format Menu in both documents, also. This enables both images to be imported as Selections over your original image.

Activate the original textured image, and from the Selection menu
choose Import. If both of the black and white images have been converted to Grayscale, they will both be available. Choose the first text image (with the whiter text in the upper left).

Now that the selection is over the texture choose the Tone Map from the Format menu. Move the Shadow slider all the way to the left to minus 100. Your image should now look like this:

This is pretty good as is, but to add a highlight, do this: Press SHFT+M to merge. Import a selection again, but this time choose the second text image (white on the lower right). Now use the Tone Map to lighten by moving the Highlight slider to +25. And now you should have something like this:

Of course, you can adjust the positioning of the text in the black and white images to make the shadows and highlights wider or thinner.
