JR's Frisbee Page
I started throwing Frisbees as a kid. Then as a teenager it at times was a popular group activity. A lot of fun and some exercise too. My neighbor Mike Overacker started a Frisbee club. The R.F.D.A. (Roanoke Frisbee Disc Association). We flew for fun and learned trick throws and catches.
Then came Ultimate. If you are not familiar with Ultimate it is some what like soccer except you throw a Frisbee instead of kicking a ball. You can't run with the disc (akin to dribbling in basketball) but must attempt to pass it to someone else. Of course you can run while not in possession of the disc. It is a very fast and demanding game. Really a bit to much for me.
Eventually came
along Disc Golf. Disc Golf is played with the same basic principles as golf,
except again the disc is substituted for the usual equipment. This was more
my speed. We set up "invisible" courses in some of the local parks
where the hole was some predetermined object already in the park, such as
trees, garbage cans, fence posts. We did have some tournaments where we actually
put paper number tags on each "hole". Mike started a campaign to
raise money to buy real official "pole holes" which consist of a
steel post, steel wire basket, a wire frame on top with chains hanging from
it.

Fishburn Park 9th "Pole" Hole
You toss the disc
between the basket and frame, hitting the chains which deflect down towards
the basket. They are not cheap, but we raised the money for eighteen pole
holes, some from individual and local business donations. We were going to
install all eighteen holes in Fishburn
Park permanently, but objections of one neighboring homeowner prevented
this. So nine are installed permanently and the other nine have portable bases
so they can be put up for tournaments or in other parks.

You may notice that this disc spins
in a direction opposite of the rest.
If thrown by a right handed
person the disc will spin clockwise.
If thrown by a left handed person it will spin counter clockwise.
This disc was thrown by a lefty!
