He married MARTHA ANNE HOUCK103,104,105 February 09, 1854 in Greensboro, Greene County, Alabama106,107, daughter of JOSEPH HOUCK and ANN WILLIAMS. She was born Bet. February - April 1834 in Montgomery County, Alabama108, and died March 27, 1922 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas.
Notes for LT. JESSE JEFFERSON MELTON:
Veteran of the Mexican-American war. Jesse J. Melton was in the same company as
his wife's cousin, Dr. Samuel Patton DuBois [Louisa
(Williams) DuBois' son]. The Greensboro Independent Volunteers, a
company of 108 men from Greene Co., left Greensboro on 27 May 1846. It is noted
in Yerby's
"HISTORY OF GREENSBORO ALABAMA FROM ITS EARLIEST SETTLEMENT",
that Jesse J. Melton and John L. Croom, so far as can
be learned, are the only surviving members of this company - sixty-two years
after its organization."

Vol. 2 of Elizabeth Pryor Harper's book "Twenty-One Southern Families"
refers to a bible of Jesse Jefferson Melton's as reference material for some of
the information in her book. However, I believe that she may have inadvertently
stated Jesse J. instead of his brother James W., who's bible information is a
contained in the same MS. Gen. Soc. collection where the bible data for Jesse's
grandfather and uncle are found.

In addition to his Mexican War service, he was a
Confederate veteran of Civil War. He enlisted in 1862 in the 1st Def Reg of Dick Taylor's Corp, Army of AL, LA, & MS.
Elected 1st Lt. C. A. 1st Batt. AL Cadets on
7/23/1863. Transfered to the 1st Reg
Mobile Vol's 11/1/1863 on account of severe hernia.
Appointed Adjutant 11/22/1863 and served in that capacity until final
surrender. (Surrender of Mobile occurred on 4/12/1865.) Jesse was paroled from
prisoner of war status and discharged on 5/20/1865.

1870 Census for Mobile (8th Ward), Mobile County,
Alabama: Page 358. His occupation is stated as "Com Mercht".
I believe that his occupation was a "commission merchant" (whatever
that is?). An article on pgs 1774 & 5 from Vol 4
of "History of Alabama and Dictionary of Alabama Biography" shows
that Price Williams (Martha's 1st cousin, once removed) was also a commission
merchant in Mobile, and had previously been a clerk as Jesse had. I suspect
that Jesse possibly worked for this man. Could Mary Williams, the 25 yr old
from TN found living in Mobile with them in 1870 also be related?
I couldn't find Jesse in the Soundex
Records for 1880 Tarrant Co. TX census. I also couldn't find him in FTW's CD of census indices for AL, TX, etc. . However, a statement by Martha in her Widows Pension
Application, and an article appearing in the Ft. Worth Star Telegram regarding
their 61 wedding anniversary, both place them in Texas 1876.
Member of the "Robert E. Lee Camp #158, United Confederate Veterans (UCV) Camp in
Fort Worth, Texas in the late 1800's and early 1900's (1896-1905 documented).
1910 census shows him living with Martha and
Mattie.

Notes for MARTHA ANNE HOUCK:
___________________________________________________________________________________
In Martha's widow's pension request dated Jan.,
1917, she states that she and Jesse J. had lived in Texas for about 40 years.
This would place them in Texas about 1876. I have not yet been able to find
them in the 1880 census, however.
___________________________________________________________________________________
Martha was a
charter member of the Julia
Jackson Chapter #141 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) that was
formed on September 28, 1897 in Fort Worth, TX, she was elected Historian of
that chapter in 1898.
____________________________________________________________________________________
Martha is shown as "head of the house" in the 1920 census in Ft. Worth, TX.
She is living at 1615 Henderson with her daughter Mattie, and with a young
family by the name of Henkley.
I suspect that Elizabeth Henkley was the Elizabeth
Massie that Martha wrote the Acrostic to in 1917.

She was a founding member (charter member #2) of the Julia Jackson Chapter #141 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) that was formed on September 28, 1897 in Fort Worth, TX, she was elected Secretary for that chapter from 1897-1902.
Organized Texas' first "Anne Carter Lee" chapter of the "Children of the Confederacy" in 1902. The chapter was authorized by the "Mary Custis Lee Children of the Confederacy", which was, itself, founded in Alexandria, Virginia in 1896.
In a Mortuary Warrant Account statement dated May 22, 1922 for costs incurred by her mother, Mattie's address was shown as 804 West Oleander Street in Ft. Worth, Texas.
At the time of her death in 1949, her last known address is shown to be the Elmwood Sanatorium in Fort Worth, Texas.
Although Oakwood Cemetery records in Fort Worth show her as being interred there in 1949, they have no further dates or markers for her (i.e. in Sexton books). This could be possible if she was cremated. Was she?

I don't know where she got her middle name, no Ketchum in family that I can find. Maybe it was from a friend of the family. There was a First Lt. William H. Ketchum from Mobile in the Civil War. Could it have been from him?

6. DR. ROBERT D.5 MELTON (SUSANNAH4 ANDERSON, BENJAMIN3, JOSHUA2, ABRAHAM1)113 was born September 09, 1832 in Greene County, Alabama114, and died May 1913 in Malakoff, Henderson County, Texas114. He married SARAH J. MITCHAM June 30, 1872 in Henderson County, Texas, daughter of JAMES MITCHAM and TABITHA COTTEN. She was born Abt. 1853 in Texas, and died Aft. 1934.
Notes for DR. ROBERT D. MELTON:
The better known pioneer Medical Doctors of Rice
were: Dr. J. A. McGee and Dr. Melton who came in 1877, Dr. Hugh Sloan began his
practice in 1884, and Dr. Jim Tolleson who came to
Rice in the early 1900s. Their unselfish
devotion to the needs of the community is gratefully acknowledged.
_______________________________________________________________________________
Rice has the distinction of being one of the few
towns that has never had a saloon. A small amount of whiskey was sold in
grocery stores until 1876, but there was no regular saloon. In 1876, Mr.
Fletcher Mitchem drew up a petition which provided
that no intoxicating liquor should be sold within three miles of Rice.
Except for one occasion the increase of population
in Rice has been very slow and even. In this particular instance the population
was almost doubled in one day. One morning in December 1877 a train stopped
here which carried about 100 new settlers who had come from New York, New
Jersey and Pennsylvania. This train was of the conventional type with the
exaggerated smokestack. It could run at the enormous rate of 35 miles an hour
and could scare all the cows of the countryside so that they wouldn’t give
their milk. These settlers had heard much of the lovely sunshine of Texas and
were looking for a good place to settle. Rice proved to be the most attractive
place they had seen so far. They decided to give it a trial at least. A number
of them stayed at the hotel run by Haynie and Ward
for the first few days.
On the morning after their arrival, the ground was
covered with snow. This was a great disappointment to them, especially to one
young man of a poetic temperament, who was among those staying at the hotel.
Early that morning he walked out on the veranda to view the landscape. The
scene, which met his eyes, reminded him of his old home up north, and he became
engulfed in a deep state of depression. Suddenly he burst into poetry. He spoke
in desperate and impassioned tones that would have done credit to any
professional tragedian. It is not known exactly what he said, but it ran
something like this: "Tell me though in mournful numbers, this is but an
empty dream. Far through the boundless sky, no gleam. Of light no breath, nor
motion. As idle as a frozen ship upon a frozen ocean."
Most of the new settlers left Rice within a few
months.
At this time Rice had two doctors, Dr. (J.A.)
McGee and Dr. Melton. The first doctor to settle here was named Martin. At that
time all other doctors went to see their patients on horseback, but this one
always walked. Horses were entirely too slow for him. He could very often be
seen hurrying across the prairie to see a patient. Dr. Martin lived in Rice
only a few years. Dr. McGee moved here in 1877, and Dr. Sloan in 1884. They had
an office together for some time on the second floor of Mr. J.A. Lackey’s
store. Dr. Carter moved to Rice in 1913

POSTMASTER ASSASSINATED AT RICE
Waxahachie Enterprise Feb. 24, 1882
Mr. J. A. Mitcham of
Rice, was in Waxahachie on Wednesday. He was one of the jury of inquest over
the dead body of Dr. J. W. Norris who was foully murdered at that place on last
Monday night, and we are indebted to him for the following account of the
horrible deed.
Mr. Morris was a merchant and postmaster at Rice.
He had finished distributing the mail that came on the 8 o'clock train that
night, and entered his residence just at the rear of his store. He soon stepped
out to get some kindling wood, but returned and asked his wife for matches,
saying that someone wished to get something from the store. About ten minutes
afterward he came running in excitedly and said to his wife, "I am shot; I
am a dead man." Dr. Melton, who lives close by, was summoned immediately,
and to his questions Mr. Norris replied: "He made me hold up my hands and
shot me twice." Two shots were heard. One of them penetrated his left side
nearly under the arm and passed near the heart. The assassin's motive is not
known, but is supposed to have been money or revenge. Mr. Norris was a man
highly respected by the people of that community and his sad fate is much
regretted by all.
