Notes for MARY ANN LEE:

{Huttash}, Ogreta Wilson,  (1502 South Jackson, Jacksonville, TX 75766), writes: "Mary Ann Lee Anderson - An interesting Character Who Has Lived Under Four Flags in Texas. Nacogdoches TX  Jan. 4", (Part 1) "...she now lives in Hamilton Co.  She is the daughter of a man once as well known in this locality as any man of his day, old Uncle Isaac Lee, as he was generally called, & a widow of Benjamin Anderson, one of a noted pioneer family of this state.  Aunt Mary Ann is interesting by reason of her intelligence as much as on account of her antiquity.  In conversation she talk something like this...'I was born in AR in 1825 (really Dec 1827). My grandmother is buried is what is now known as the Henderson graveyard, a few miles west of Alexandria, LA.  My father moved to Texas in 1828 & 1st settled where     the town of San Augustine now stands.  He built the first house there.  He soon found that he was on a survey of land belong to a Mexican, & he vacated it.  Then he lived a short time near where the village of Melrose now stands, ten miles east of the town of Nacogdoches & from there he came to the old homestead adjoining the town of Nacogdoches, on the southeast, locating on what is still known as the Isaac Lee labor of land, the place that he improved & occupied while he raised his children under 4 or 5 different flag -- 1st the Mexican, next the Texas Republic, the the US, then the Confederate States, & again the USA.  In 1870 father & I removed to Cherokee Co, near Alto, where he died in 1880, & I   removed to Hamilton Co. in 1885. // Oh, I've had many ups & downs & gone through many dangers.  I was in the "Run Away Scrape" in 1836, when all the people fled from here in a panic at the approach of the - - - despot Santa Anna, with the heartless Mexican army.  We crossed the Sabine River for safety, a dangerous crossing.  The river was overflowed & was r(unning?) (wild?) & we had to cross in an old leaky --- ferry boat & everybody was trying to get on it at once, & the men had to constantly dip water out as we crossed, & it did seem like the boat would sink anyhow. We remained over there several months, from April till August, & father made occasional trips back home.   We looked to Sam Houston for protection, & we had the greatest faith in him.  I still fondly respect his memory. // There were times here when life was uncertain.  Many a night did the women & children gather in at the old Adolphus Sterne residence, where old man Hoya now lives, so as to be within the protection of guards against Indains.  The old lady Sterne now lives in Austin & her son, Charley, at Palestine. They can tell about these same things. // When Sam Houston was wounded at the battle of San Jacinto & came  home, he brought with him a young mexican boy as Houston always did keep a servant to attend him.  Well, he would have this boy get his horse ready in town & help him up & come out with him to our house to drink buttermilk.  Houston was extremely fond of buttermilk, & we had plenty of the very best.  The cattle range was fine & we had a fine spring where we kept the milk cool & fresh.  It was in summer time. Houston would have the boy open our yard gate & he would ride his horse up to the front gallery & get off onto it & walk in on his crutches, leaving his horse to this Mexican servant boy.  We liked for him to come & I almost worshipped him. I was only a little girl but I knew all about it.  Oh, those grand old times & folks!  I love to talk & think about them. They have passed away, & I'll soon be gone too.'// As the old lady boarded the train to leave some of her old family servants, one,an old black woman, bade her farewell with tears & sobs."
