How to Make Eggscellent Egg Food by Sally O’Dwyer

I believe strongly that cage birds need soft food, especially during the breeding season.  I like to feed egg food to encourage my English budgies to come into condition, when the hen is sitting on eggs, and then, of course, when there are chicks in the nest.  My hens fed their chicks very well this year and I attribute this to the soft food.  I thought I would share how I make and serve the soft food.

I can’t tell you exactly how much this recipe makes, but it served about 14 pairs of Budgies for up to two weeks at a time.  You can substitute all you want!

  • 2 dozen eggs
  • Bread crumbs  (stock up on this when on sale!)
  • One package of frozen peas
  • One small package of mixed veggies (corn, carrots, lima and green beans)
  • Some wheat germ (a cup?)
  • A couple of cups of quick oats
  • A couple of heaping teaspoons of Hagen’s Prime (vitamin, mineral, amino acid supplement)
  • Cooking Spray, such as PAM
  • Butter

 Directions:

I have always hated to cook eggs because it’s so hard to clean the pot afterwards.  I have discovered a way to cook 2 dozen eggs so they don’t stick (thank you Kitty Newman!)  Break the 24 eggs into a large bowl and mix well.  Set Aside.  Take a large pot; spray the bottom liberally with PAM (cooking spray).   Next, melt about a quarter cup of butter in the pan on medium heat.   Now that the bottom of the pan is well covered, pour in your eggs.  Cover the pot with a lid.  Don’t start scrambling the eggs until the eggs have cooked through pretty well—as if you were going to make an omelet.  After the eggs have set, scramble them with a spatula until they are well scrambled and fairly dry.

You can now add to the pan the other ingredients.  I usually add at least a cup of bread crumbs to the eggs—the bread crumbs stick to the eggs and make it, well, more “eatable” for the birds.  Add the other dry ingredients.  Mix in the veggies.  You can also add leftovers in the fridge, such as rice or pasta.  Be creative!  Mix up your concoction well.

Divide into plastic “Tupperware” containers.  Place as much as you think you will need to feed all of your birds for a day.  Place your containers in the freezer.  Each morning, defrost one of the containers in the microwave and serve to your budgies.  I usually just place the egg food on top of their seed in their bowls. I try to put only as much as they need—perhaps 2 teaspoons per pair of birds and more once they are feeding babies.  My breeding birds are kept in my basement, so the food doesn’t seem to go bad.  Whatever they don’t eat just seems to dry out.  The birds really seem to love this recipe.  When I come down to feed them in the morning, they go nuts.  After I dump the food into their bowls, they dive in with gusto.  It makes the effort all the worthwhile.  Bon Appetite!
