The Exhibition Budgie List--Y'all Come Visit~! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ExhibitionBudgerigarGroup/ The Exhibition Budgie list on Yahoo Groups was created for those of us who are interested in all aspects of keeping, breeding and showing Exhibition Budgerigars. Topics covered on the list vary widely, including everything from nutrition, to genetics, to how to prepare your bird for a show. The Group keeps fanciers around the world in touch with each other. The List is fairly active, and hobbyists from Australia, the U.K., Pakistan, Puerto Rico, Europe, the U.S., and many other countries participate. While there are some members who just keep budgies as pets, most of the people who post messages are fairly serious about breeding and showing. It's interesting to see how people in other parts of the world care for their budgies--there are some definite differences in bird keeping between countries. For example, in the U.S., most breeders seem to prefer all wire breeding cages, while in the U.K. the wood cabinet style are most often used. Photos can be found at the website. They are posted under "files". There are also some interesting sites listed under the "links" heading. Questions posted on the list are usually answered swiftly, which is especially helpful if you have a sick bird. Since members hail from many countries with varying time zones, there is usually someone awake somewhere who will reply fairly rapidly with advice and support. This type of information has allowed me to save a bird or two. I recently obtained detailed information on how to build a better nest box, and participated in a discourse regarding the optimal size of a breeding cage. Of course, answers received are just other people's opinions, but the total combined members' years of experience in the hobby is astonishing. Besides being able to post your own questions, site visitors also learn from other's questions and suggestions. The list is a great asset for those who are physically isolated from other budgie fanciers. If the next budgie breeder lives several hundred miles from you and you are unable to get together, the list is a good opportunity to "talk birds" with others who share your interest. There are a number of ABS members who visit the list. Perhaps you already know some of them. It is fun "knowing" other members through the list and then meeting them in person at shows. Since the same people tend to post on the list, members get to know each other and support each other. To sign-up for the list, visit the website groups.yahoo.com/group/ExhibitionBudgieListand click on "Click to Join" icon. If you don't have a Yahoo ID, you'll need to get one, but it is super easy, just click on "Sign-up" under "Don't have a Yahoo ID" box, fill in the form that comes up and you are all set. Don't worry, you won't get a virus or any extra spam--at least I haven't experienced any problems in the couple of years that I have been a member. The list does not involve live chat. It is basically a message board where members can exchange emails about budgies. I personally do not choose to have the list messages delivered to my inbox--there are too many messages. Instead, I have bookmarked the site and then I am able to visit at my leisure, or whenever I have a burning budgie question. I hope you have the opportunity to visit the list, pose a question, or answer one! See you on the list, Sally |
