OLD POWAY PARK'S
TRAIN SONG FESTIVAL 2009

October 10, 2009 10:00am - 4:00pm

There exists a special connection between trains and music. The sounds of the railroad, the pounding of the steel wheels on the steel rails and the blast of the steam whistle seem to flood the mind with musical inspiration. There will be a full line-up of live entertainment throughout the day. Additionally, a children’s railroad and hobo costume contest will be held for prizes at the park’s gazebo during the festival. Kids, come dressed in your best railroad or hobo costume to participate! This is an enjoyable way to spend the day with the family, immersed in the musical history of the great railroads.

Trails & Rails will be there as well as Ken Graydon,
Patty Hall, Tanya Rose and Allen Singer as well as many more!

Come on over and join in the pickin' and singin'

The San Diego Folk Song Society meets every second Sunday of the month, from 2:00 to 6:00 PM, at Old Time Music in North Park. A special leader picks a theme and leads the song circle. The leader starts the circle off, plays some songs related to the theme, then the rest of us follow, playing theme related songs, first time around the circle. After that, it's open choice. So please join us, for an exciting musical time, sing some songs, just listen, play your instruments and enjoy being a part of the great folk tradition. SDFSS.org

Believe it or not, it fits all of our criteria - including an in-house sound system! There is a Yamaha Clavinova for you keyboarders (just let us know you're coming so we can leave it set up.)

Like most coffee houses, they augment their drink menu with a few pastries; however they have no problem with you bringing in your dinner as long as you order a drink. The shopping center has a Taco Shop, a Pizza Parlor, and a BBQ Restaurant. Like the name implies - it's a friendly sort of place.

Friendly Grounds is a church owned and operated coffee house which caters to Santee's Carlton Hills neighborhood. It's large and the decor is new and clean, complete with a children's play area and a couple of meeting rooms. (Good for instrument cases or warming up.)

Come on by and help us make it a success. San Diego's folk scene needs this.

See Ya Soon!

FOLK ARTS RARE RECORDS

http://www.folkartsrarerecords.com/

ROOTS MUSIC FOLK ARTS SINGERS CIRCLE
at Kadan
4696 30th Street
(between Adams Ave & Madison Ave.)
San Diego, CA 92116
(619) 640-2500

We're moving our Singers Circle to Tuesdays from the front porch at Folk Arts to KADAN which is on the corner of Adams & 30th. They have a nice back room with good acoustics and Chris says free coffee. They sort of remind me of a back room at an English pub.

If a song ain't intensely personal, truly introspective and red hot, we won't sell it or sing it. The circle starts at 6pm and runs to the neighborhood of 9pm. As I heard someone say about their place a long time ago. If you don't drop by The Singers Circle, you've got a hole in your soul.

--Lou Curtiss

At the heart of this gathering is old time roots music...everything from honky tonk to hillbilly, the old front porch or barn dance to the juke joint or Carnegie Hall. The whole idea is to make music on your own instead of going to yet another concert or sitting at home in front of your TV. This way, you are participating in the time honored and on-going tradition and perhaps teaching a song to someone who has not heard it before. Newcomers and old friends are equally welcome, so come and join this newly formed circle. Lou and Virginia would just love to see you!

~~News Flash~~

Lou Curtiss has recently offered to play and discuss music related to future SDFSS song circle themes at his Roots music nights. Try to come and play at Lou's each Wednesday before we meet for our song circle. If you really want to be close to the source on everything related to the music we love, Lou's is the place to be!

THE DIGITALIZATION PROJECT

September 29th, 2008

The project is going quite well. We have been in touch with the people who used to own In The Alley in Escondido about adding their library of tapes to the project. I'm up to the 8th San Diego Folk Festival (over 200 DVDs) & another 50 from The Sam Hinton library. It's amazing how well some of these have held up.

Be sure to listen to Jazz Roots with Lou Curtiss from 8:00 to 10:00 PM, on KSDS (88.3 FM)

MELE OHANA is an informal group of folks who like to sing and play Hawaiian music. They meet every Sunday from 2:00PM to 5:00PM at the Hawaiian Island Barbeque, (858) 483-9830, 1768 Garnet Ave. in Pacific Beach (one block west of Lamont in the Von's-Longs Shopping Center). It was founded by Uncle Helenihi Clinton ("Uncle" being a term of respect) in order to preserve the music and culture of Hawaii. You are cordially invited to listen and/or participate any Sunday afternoon. For more information call Jack Knight (619) 223-3638 or e-mail him at: jknight124@cox.net (Thank you, Mark Beck, for letting us know about this!)

Also, If you go to Kealanis Restaurant, 137 West D St. in Encinitas (760)942-5642 any Saturday from 2:00PM to 4:00PM you will hear the Uku Pickers jamming on the sidewalk just outside the restaurant. Sounds like fun to me!

Aloha! Here are a couple of websites for you lovers of Hawaiian slack key guitar. They were sent to me by Ralph Lowe, a hard core fan of this lovely music. www.taropatch.net is the main place to go to for information about Slack Key, Steel Guitar, Ukulele and other things related to Hawaiian music.

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/SCSKS/ This Yahoo site is primarily for the Southern California Slack Key Society. They are a group of people in Southern California dedicated to cultivating and spreading the Kiho'alu Aloha (Love of Slack Key) They tend to post there for info regarding their local events, the open mics that members participate in and Kanikapilas and KanikaPilsners (jamming and homebrew). Mike McVay is the moderator of the Yahoo site. Be sure to check out the files section for KGS (Kanikapila Guide Sheets) and Tabs. You probably have to register to see the files, events and perhaps the site in general.

San Diego Folk Heritage preserves and promotes acoustic music, storytelling, and Contra Dances in greater San Diego. We provide an opportunity for members of the community to see, hear, and take part in these activities.

We meet these goals throughout the year by presenting concerts, and storytelling by local artists, by offering weekly Contra Dances featuring live music, and by sponsoring concerts by touring musicians. In addition, we present the Sam Hinton Folk Heritage Festival every May, featuring concerts, Contra Dances, storytelling, and educational workshops. We also co-sponsor the Sea Chantey Festival on board the Star of India, and the Train Song Festival at Old Poway Park in October.

We believe that the many traditions of our various cultures are important and that they must be preserved and passed on. We also believe that without a conscious effort to preserve these arts, they can easily be lost in the fast pace and noise of today's popular culture.

Concerts at Dizzy's

Downtown San Diego
www.DizzysSanDiego.com

By Randy Hoffman

It is spare, inexpensive and comfortable. Instead of talking, patrons listen. And if it's running on the idealistic fumes of his youth, Chuck Perrin doesn't care. Dizzy's, the performance space he has operated since April of 2000, has refocused San Diego's sputtering jazz scene and is fast becoming a destination for original performance of all kinds.

Located at the southern tip of Seventh Avenue, Dizzy's restful interior counters the flux of it's East Village surroundings. To the east, the ballpark expansion rages. To the west, the hustle of the Gaslamp rules. But beneath the open beamed ceilings and within the aging brick walls of a former warehouse, Perrin has factored out alcohol, television, neon, and other distractions common to local music venues, creating an atmosphere as friendly to the audience as it is to the performer. "People come into Dizzy's because it's not like anyplace else," he says.

Under the loving and inspiring leadership of Jimmy Duke, who has been a long-time supporter of acoustic and instrumental music, DARK-THIRTY PRODUCTIONS was born. Taking its name from the time concerts begin, thirty minutes after it gets dark, and nestled amid a grove of swaying eucalyptus trees in the aptly named Eucalyptus Hills section of Lakeside, California, just a 25-minute drive from downtown San Diego, house concerts are held in this tranquil setting some eight to ten times each year, with the help of a group of sponsors and staff.

Guests enjoy some of the finest local and touring performers of acoustic folk and instrumental music. Admission to each concert includes complementary hot and cold foods, soft drinks and other beverages, desserts and coffee. House concerts are a great way to enjoy performances in an intimate, cozy setting, while meeting people of similar interests and making new friends.

Be sure to call for reservations and talk to someone who has been to Jimmy's for driving instructions. Take along a flashlight to help you negotiate the dirt path that leads to Jimmy's house. Its a great venue and you'll love the way he's converted his living room into a warm, intimate concert hall.

Nestled in the foothills of East County, just 30 minutes from downtown San Diego California, lies a small community called Harbison Canyon that is between El Cajon and Alpine. It is here that Canyonfolk House Concerts came into being. We hope to bring a rich and diverse blend of styles of acoustic music from Alternative Folk, Rock, Country, Bluegrass, and others in an intimate environment. Every concert will include a dinner, dessert, pot-luck buffet with coffee, tea, and bottled water. It is not required for guests to contribute, but it makes for a much more tastier buffet of treats when they do. If you would like to bring one of your favorite recipes then by all means please do!
