If you've always wanted to lead a song and aren't sure how to go about structuring your group's time here is one idea to help you get started.

The best song selections are usually:

  • Relatively simple or familiar
  • In keys that work for most instruments: C, G, D, A, E
  • With a repetitive chorus and not too many verses
  • It needs to be a song you know well enough to sing yourself
  • Print the song in a large format so the group can read it easily from a distance.

Suggested Plan for Song Leading
(Based on one hour break-out time)

  • 10 minutes: Move to practice site
    Introductions
    Set up music
    Discuss song type
Play through verse and chorus (Group listens)
  • 10 minutes: Teach melody of verse/chorus
Idea: Show words only (to keep players focused on learning the melody)
Review difficult melodic and word passages and phrasing
Check to see if key is OK
  • 10 minutes: Flip page over to show new sheet with words AND chords
    All play and sing
  • 20 minutes: Discuss / try: Arrangement ideas
    Lead/break possibilities
    Harmonies
    Intro Dynamics
    Ending Dynamics
  • 10 minutes: Get into performance places and rehearse arrangement and group/song intro
