from Section IV ON PRAYER AND INTERCESSION: |
And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the
field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was
not arrayed like one of these.
Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is,
and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe
you, O ye of little faith?
*Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What
shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?*
(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly
Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
*But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and
all these things shall be added unto you.*
Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall
take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day
is the evil thereof. (Mat. 6:27-34)
And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy,
grievously tormented.
And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.
The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou
shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my
servant shall be healed.
For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I
say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come,
and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed,
*Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no,
not in Israel.*
And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west,
and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob,
in the kingdom of heaven. (Mat. 8:5-11)
And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us:
we perish.
And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little
faith?
Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; *and there was
a great calm.*
But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that
even the winds and the sea obey him! (Mat. 8:24-27)
And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were
troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer;
it is I; be not afraid.
And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come
unto thee on the water.
And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship,
he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning
to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him,
and said unto him, *O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou
doubt?*
And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
(Mat. 14:25-32)
And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him:
and the child was cured from that very hour.
Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said,
Why could not we cast him out?
And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief:
for verily I say unto you, *If ye have faith as a
grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain,
Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove;
and nothing shall be impossible unto you.*
Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
(Mat. 17:17-21)
Again I say unto you, That *if two of you shall agree on
earth* as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be
done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am
I in the midst of them. (Mat 18:18-20)
He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my
Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it,
thy will be done. (Mat 26:41-42)
As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto
the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.
And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James,
and John the brother of James.
And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and
seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.
And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado,
and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.
*And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out,
* he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them
that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.
And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha
cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.
And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the
age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great
astonishment. (Mark 5:35-42)
Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are
at home in the body we are away from the Lord.
*We live by faith, not by sight.*
We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the
body and at home with the Lord.
So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in
the body or away from it. (2 Cor. 5:5-9)
Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders
[presbyters; senior or "seasoned" members] of the church; and
let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name
of the Lord:
And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord
shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be
forgiven him.
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another,
that ye may be healed.
*The effectual fervent prayer of a
righteous man* availeth much.
Elias [Elijah] was a man subject to like passions as we are,
and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained
not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.
And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth
brought forth her fruit.
Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;
Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the
error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide
a multitude of sins. (James 5:13-20)
And if we know that He hears us--whatever we ask--we know that
we have what we asked of him.
*If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to
death, he should pray* and God will give him life. I refer to
those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that
leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that.
All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.
(1 John 5:14-16 NIV)
O how praying rests the weary!
When you met with great temptation,
O how praying rests the weary!
When your heart was filled with anger,
O how praying rests the weary!
When sore trials came upon you,
O how praying rests the weary!
Pray for Them
"Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour,
and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless
them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and *PRAY*
for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be
the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his
sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the
just and on the unjust." (Matthew 5:43-45)
Therefore, Take No Thought...
Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
So Great Faith
And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him
a centurion, beseeching him,
What Manner of Man Is This?
And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that
the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.
O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them,
walking on the sea.
If Ye Have Faith As a Grain of Mustard Seed
Nothing Shall Be Impossible to You
Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation,
how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you?
bring him hither to me.
If Two of You Shall Agree
Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be
bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be
loosed in heaven.
Whatsoever Ye Shall Ask
Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have
faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the
fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou
removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.
And *all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer,* believing, ye
shall receive. (Mat 21:21-22)
Watch and Pray
Watch and pray, *that ye enter not* into temptation: the spirit
indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
But When He Had Put Them All Out...
While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's
house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou
the Master any further?
We Live By Faith, Not By Sight
Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given
us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
The Apostle James' Formula:
Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him
sing psalms.
Praying for Others
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask
anything according to His will, he hears us.

Did You Think to Pray?
Ere you left your room this morning,
Did you think to pray?
In the name of Christ our Savior,
Did you sue for loving favor,
As a shield today?
Prayer will change the night to day;
So when life seems dark and dreary,
Don’t forget to pray.
Did you think to pray?
By His dying love and merit,
Did you claim the Holy Spirit
As your guide and stay?
Prayer will change the night to day;
So when life seems dark and dreary,
Don’t forget to pray.
Did you think to pray?
Did you plead for grace, my brother,
That you might forgive another
Who had crossed your way?
Prayer will change the night to day;
So when life seems dark and dreary,
Don’t forget to pray.
Did you think to pray?
When your soul was bowed in sorrow,
Balm of Gilead did you borrow
At the gates of day?
Prayer will change the night to day;
So when life seems dark and dreary,
Don’t forget to pray.
