Diversity and Respect

It seems the Mexican entrepreneur who was promoting bullfighting in Nogales, let's call him Mr. M., was expecting the Northern animal rights community to keep its distance in deference to cultural differences. Everyone should respect the bullfighting aspect of Mexican culture because it is Mexican culture. Keep your distance, gringo liberal!

I don't know. That's what I picked up.

I don't agree with the idea that I should respect the right to torture and kill animals for popular entertainment and money. No.

I would never, however, presume to tell Mr. M what to do. Mr. M and I can get along fine, even be friends, if we refrain from telling each other what to do. I think Mr. M and I would probably find much in common to be friends over if we each accept, to a certain extent, cultural clashes among people.

In this world there are two kinds of people: those who are like me and those who are not. I think most people would find the same is true from their own perspectives. No matter who you are, there are a lot more of them than there are of you.

Most people are different from ourselves. If everyone would just recognize that, and to a certain extent accept and excuse cultural clashes like over bullfighting, the world might be a better place.

It seems weird to me that cows walk the streets and rats are fed like Gods in certain poor parts of the world, and how they must think us savages for regarding that cow as simple food. I'd never prevent the Korean family down the street from eating dog, if that's really what they do. If someone wants to put chickens in a ring with knives on their feet, I don't like it but I don't have to see it. That's all gray area stuff.

So when do you go to war?

There was, or is, a group of perverts, something about the International Man Boy Love Association or something like that. Well, I don't care what culture you are from, adults don't sexually touch children. I know the bonobo apes do that, but among humans such behavior ought to be cause for war, so to speak.

That was easy. So when do you go to war?

I'm working on it.
