December 17,
2008 - Tommy Connors was named to
the Associated Press Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) All-America
Team. Connors, a junior defensive back from Marrero, was a third-team
selection and one of seven players from the Southland Conference named
to the prestigious squad. The former Archbishop Shaw product became the
second Lion to earn AP All-America honors since the program was reinstated
joining Felton Huggins, who was a third-team pick in 2004.
December 14,
2008 - Devon Currie, who was a reserve
linebacker and special teams standout as a true freshman in 2006, died
at his home in Alpharetta, Ga., after battling Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare
form of bone cancer. He was 20. Currie played in all 11 games for
the Lions in 2006 where he excelled on special teams and was credited with
nine tackles on the season. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Currie posted a season-high
three tackles in games against Jacksonville (Fla.) and Gardner-Webb and
added tackles against New Mexico State, Nicholls State and Northwestern
State. On and off the field, Currie earned the admiration of his
teammates and coaching staff as he was selected as the Lions’ Special Teams
Most Valuable Player after the 2006 campaign.
November 25,
2008 - After catching 51 passes in his
inaugural season and helping Southeastern to its most wins since
2004, Simmie Yarborough was selected as Freshmen of the Year as the 2008
All-Southland Conference team. Southeastern, which finished 5-7 overall,
placed 10 players on the All-Conference teams with defensive back Tommy
Connors selected to the first team with defensive back Marquis Powell a
second-team selection. Eight players, highlighted by running back Jay Lucas,
were named honorable mention as Southeastern placed its most players on
the team since joining the league in 2005. Joining Lucas as honorable
mention selections were Yarborough (tight end), Brad Bardy (offensive line),
Kevin Hughes (offensive line), Devin Boutwell (defensive line), Steven
Honore (defensive line), Quinten Pierre (linebacker) and Powell (return
specialist).

2008 - A short-handed Southeastern football
team found itself down, 35-7, early in the fourth quarter in its season-finale
at arch-rival Nicholls State Saturday at John L. Guidry Stadium. And like
it did through much of the second half of the season in Southland Conference
games, the Lions failed to quit as they fought back with a chance to win.
With head coach Mike Lucas coaching from the press box in his first appearance
since a heart valve procedure on Oct. 30, Southeastern scored three touchdowns
in the fourth quarter and was driving for a potential tying score. But
Nicholls State stopped a late drive and held on for a 35-28 victory in
re-claiming the River Bell before a crowd of 7,352 in the season-finale
for both teams. Junior linebacker Quinten Pierre earned the final
Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor and was selected
as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Defensive Player of the Week.
Pierre finished with a season-high 14 tackles and four fumble recoveries.
Pierre’s 65-yard return set up Southeastern’s first touchdown. Starting
at middle linebacker for the first time in 2008, Pierre also returned a
fumble 20 yards for a touchdown.

2008 - After a first half in which it was
outgained 323-46, Southeastern played for its fallen coach in a place where
he spent 15 years of his coaching career. Brian Babin found Chris
Wilson on a 14-yard scoring pass in overtime and Southeastern rallied for
an improbable 30-27 win over Sam Houston State on a chilly Saturday night
at Bowers Stadium.

- The Southeastern Louisiana football team
could not overcome a 38-point first half performance by Texas State, dropping
its home finale, 38-24, to its SLC rival Saturday afternoon at Strawberry
Stadium.

- McNeese State junior running back Todd
Pendland rushed for 173 yards on 24 carries to lead the No. 16 Cowboys
to a 24-14 win over Southeastern Louisiana in Southland Conference action
Saturday night at Strawberry Stadium.

- The Southeastern Louisiana football team’s
rally from a 28-point deficit fell just short, as the Lions dropped a 28-21
decision at No. 13 Central Arkansas in Southland Conference action Saturday
afternoon at Estes Stadium.

- Southeastern Louisiana junior defensive
back Tommy Connors’ interception with just over one minute remaining helped
the Lions hold off a late Northwestern State rally and earn a 26-21 Southland
Conference victory on Homecoming Saturday at Strawberry Stadium.

- Southeastern Louisiana University football
coach Mike Lucas will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2008 season.
Lucas, in his second year as head coach at Southeastern, will soon undergo
a heart valve procedure and will miss the final six games for the Lions.
Offensive coordinator Tommy Condell has been named acting head coach for
the remainder of the 2008 campaign.

with 6.1 seconds left and Stephen F. Austin rallied from a 21-point halftime
deficit to stun Southeastern Louisiana, 48-45, in the Southland Conference
opener for both teams Saturday at Homer Bryce Stadium.

2008 - North Dakota placekicker Brandon
Hellevang’s 49-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left and short as time
expired, allowing the Lions to close out its non-conference schedule with
a thrilling 38-35 victory over previously unbeaten North Dakota Saturday
night at Strawberry Stadium.

2008 - Louisiana Tech junior running back
Daniel Porter finished with 150 total yards and two touchdowns and the
Bulldogs outlasted Southeastern Louisiana, 41-26 Saturday night at Joe
Aillet Stadium.

2008 - Southeastern Louisiana sophomore
linebacker Mark Newbill forced a fumble on the potential game-winning two-point
conversion, allowing the Lions to hold off a late South Dakota rally and
earn a 31-30 victory in the 2008 home opener Saturday night at Strawberry
Stadium.

2008 - Wesley Carroll completed 15 of 23
passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns while Anthony Dixon bolstered a
Mississippi State rushing attack with 80 yards and two scores as the Bulldogs
overcame a slow start and defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 34-10, before
an announced crowd of 41,938 Saturday night at Davis-Wade Stadium.

- A potential-game winning pass from Alcorn
State quarterback Timothy Buckley went over the head of tight end Channin
Pugh, allowing Southeastern Louisiana to hold off a late Brave rally and
earn a 34-28 victory in the 2008 season opener for both teams Saturday
evening at Jack Spinks Stadium.

he announced that Baylor transfer Tyler Beatty, a 6-foot-3 sophomore from

- The Southeastern Louisiana football team
placed five student-athletes on the 2008 Preseason All-Southland Conference
Football Teams. Four of the Lions' five preseason selections were
on the first team. Leading the way was senior running back Jay Lucas, along
with fellow first team selections junior placekicker Jeff Turner, junior
defensive back Tommy Connors and senior punter Cody Samples. Senior defensive
back Marquis Powell rounded out the Southeastern contingent as a second
team pick.

- The Southeastern Louisiana University
football team was picked to finish seventh overall as the Southland Conference
released its 2008 preseason polls.
May 14, 2008
- Former Southeastern Louisiana football
standouts Earl Cager and Byron Ross, who were each a part of the team's
gridiron revival in 2003, each reached deals with a pair of NFL clubs.
Cager signed a free agent deal with the defending Super Bowl champion New
York Giants while Ross received a tryout offer with the New Orleans Saints.

- Former Southeastern Louisiana University
football coach Dennis Roland died in Cumming, Ga., after a long battle
with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He was 51.

2007 - Former SLU Offensive Lineman, Steve
Campbell, coached Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC) to an
undefeated season and the 2007 NJCAA National Championship. Steve
played for the Lions in 1984-85 when the program was discontinued
in 1985.

- EIGHT LIONS NAMED TO ALL-SOUTHLAND FOOTBALL
TEAM

- Led by first-team selections Jay Lucas and Jeff Turner, Southeastern
Louisiana placed eight players on the 2007 All-Southland Conference Football
Team. Joining Lucas and Turner were Earl Cager, Eric Jackson and
Tommy Connors who were second-team selections by the league's head coaches
and sports information directors along with honorable mention picks Byron
Ross, Mark Newbill and Antonio Richardson.

2007 - For the first time since 1980, the
River Bell will reside in Hammond. A stiff defensive effort and a
steady dose of junior running back Jay Lucas allowed Southeastern Louisiana
to rally from a 13-point halftime deficit and defeat Southland Conference
rival Nicholls State, 17-13, in the 2007 regular season finale for both
teams Saturday afternoon at Strawberry Stadium. Southeastern finishes
2007 season 3-8 and 2-5 in conference play.

players attended the tailgate party at Friendship Circle and joined in

in the fourth quarter to send the Bobcats past Southeastern Louisiana,

Endsley's 18-yard touchdown run with 8:00 remaining in the game capped

Conference action Saturday afternoon at Turpin Stadium.

consecutive week, the Southeastern Louisiana football team was no match
for a FBS opponent, as Kansas manhandled the Lions, 62-0, Saturday night
at Memorial Stadium.

Former
Southeastern All-American Felton Huggins, completing his collegiate career
as the most prolific wide receiver in school history, made the most in
his professional debut Saturday in the opening week of the NFL Europe season.
Huggins, who was drafted by the Frankfurt Galaxy in the 21st round of the
2007 free agent draft, caught three passes for 32 yards and a touchdown
in a 30-14 win over Amsterdam.

spring practice schedule Saturday, as the White team scored two fourth
quarter touchdowns on the way to a 21-7 win over the Green team in the
intrasquad Spring Game at Strawberry Stadium.

- Fans wishing to be a part of football
signing day at Southeastern Louisiana University can do so at the Football
Recruiting Bash February 7 at the Landmark Hotel. Coach Mike Lucas
announced the signing of 31 athletes to a National Letter of Intent
for the 2007 season. The class, which included three players who
signed with Southeastern out of junior college in December and one Division
I transfer, included 24 players from the state of Louisiana. Eighteen players
were signed on defense, including eight defensive linemen, seven defensive
backs and three linebackers. The Lions also inked one of the top-rated
quarterbacks in Louisiana, one of the top kickers in the nation and four
receivers, including a pair of prototypical tight ends.

Coach Mike Lucas has announced the addition of two new staff members and
one internal promotion. The Lions added Thomas Condell, a 10+ year
coaching veteran of the Southland Conference and Canadian Football League,
as offensive coordinator and Allen Rudolph, who most recently coached at
Samford University, as offensive line coach. Former assistant Tony
Hatmaker has assumed the role of compliance director. Matt Webb has
been elevated to defensive coordinator.

football players selected to play Second Annual Magnolia
Grid-Iron Classic to be held at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson,
Miss. Former Lions Jim Hall (P/K, Hammond), Donald Usry (C, Loranger)
and Demoris Hardiman (LB, Grenada, Miss.) will represent Southeastern and
are three of eight players representing the Southland Conference.

- Michael Lucas, who has served as
Southeastern Louisiana University's interim head football coach for much
of the 2006 season, has been appointed head coach. Coach Lucas previously
served as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Sam Houston
State for 15 years repeatedly producing defensive units that ranked among
the best in NCAA Division I-AA football and the Southland Conference.

62-0. Texas Tech lost the coin toss and had a penalty on its first
play of the game. Those were about the only negatives the Division I-A
Red Raiders had after a disappointing 12-3 loss last week at TCU.
Head coach Dennis Roland missed the game with heath issues.

- BALANCED ATTACK LEADS LIONS TO 41-13
VICTORY OVER DOLPHINS. Led by a balanced attack that racked up 423
yards total offense, including 228 on the ground, SLU erupted for 28 points
in the second quarter and cruised to a 41-13 win over Jacksonville (Fla.)
University in the home opener at Strawberry Stadium. Running back
Jay Lucas was named the Southland Conference Aeropostale Football Offensive
Player of the Week. He rushed nine times for a career-best 125 yards,
averaging 13.9 yards per carry, including a 42-yard burst for the Lions'
first score. Head coach Dennis Roland missed the game with heath
issues.

45-0 Attendence of 28,258 at Southern Miss. Southeastern, was
without second-year head coach Dennis Roland who was being treated for
a viral infection.

LIONS DROP 30-15 DECISION TO MUMME, AGGIES. New Mexico State’s Chase
Holbrook (SLU transfer), in his first career start, completed 29 of 40
passes for 381 yards and a pair of touchdowns and the Aggies snapped the
nation’s longest losing streak as they defeated SLU, 30-15. SLU running
back Jay Lucas was named Southland Conference Offensive Player of
the Week. Lucas, a sophomore from Baton Rouge, rushed 17 times for
96 yards including a long of 19 yards.

A total of 90 Southeastern Louisiana football players reported to camp
Sunday, Agust 5 as the start of fall football practice officially gets
underway at Strawberry Stadium. All practices are free and
open to the media and public. A total of 21 practice dates dot the preseason
schedule including scrimmages August 19 and August 22. Fan Appreciation
Night is scheduled in conjunction with the August 22 scrimmage at 7 p.m.

effective April 5 following 31 years of dedicated service to the university
and football program and the athletic department.

director at Southeastern since June of 2000, announced that he is relinquishing
his position at the university effective today.

In a pre-game ceremony, the baseball diamond at Southeastern’s Alumni Field
was named in honor of the late Coach Pat Kenelly, who coached baseball
and football and served as athletic director in a Southeastern career that
spanned almost three decades.

notice in a release by the league office Tuesday. Huggins, a senior
from Zachary, La., was Southeastern's lone first team pick. The Lions placed
six players on the all-SLC Second Team and had six Honorable Mention selections.

Trey Willie threw for 279 yards and four scores while the Lion defense
held the 10th-ranked offense of Mississippi Valley State to 275 total yards
in a 38-21 season-ending non-conference victory on a chilly Saturday afternoon
at Rice-Totten Stadium.

Nichols State Homecoming game. SLU 28 NSU 38, a sellout crowd
Saturday night at Strawberry Stadium. It was a rematch that was 20
years too long in the making, with both teams combining for 1,000 yards
total offense. The two Southland Conference rivals, separated by
94 miles, met for the first time since a 21-17 Nicholls State victory in
1985. The SFPA honorary team captains for the game were former offensive
linemen Sam Conerly (1949) and Lyle Walker(1979).

in Southland Conference football action Saturday evening at Bowers Stadium.

Southeastern was a rude guest in crashing Stephen F. Austin’s homecoming
party Saturday afternoon at Homer Bryce Stadium. Mario Gilbert rushed
for three touchdowns while Trey Willie passed for a career-high 308 yards
and two scores as Southeastern rolled up a season-high 526 yards total
offense and dismantled Southland Conference rival SFA, 45-23.

It might have taken nearly 20 years to get its first win in a conference
game, but it was well worth the wait for Southeastern Louisiana against
Southland Conference rival McNeese State. Trey Willie completed 21
of 37 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns and Southeastern piled up
458 yards total offense in a 37-13 win over the No. 20-ranked Cowboys Saturday
night at Strawberry Stadium. The win snapped a four-game losing streak
for Southeastern (2-4, 1-2 SLC), which last earned a league win on Nov.
16, 1985 in a 20-14 victory over Northwestern State.

- Senior Trey Willie, in his first
career start, threw for 236 yards and three touchdowns and Southeastern
Louisiana finally opened the Dennis Roland era with a convincing 48-21
victory over regional rival Alcorn State Saturday at Strawberry Stadium.
As both teams played its first game of the season following the devastation
caused by Hurricane Katrina, Southeastern (1-0) piled up 459 yards of total
offense and defeated Alcorn State (0-1) for the first time in three tries.
Honorary Captain is former offensive lineman and SFPA President JIM FENDLASON
(1973).

SLU Coaches Memorial Golf Tournament - Santa Maria Golf Club - Baton Rouge,
LA - This year’s tourny will honor the
memory of Coach Darryl Morris. Darryl was an outstanding back for
the Lions from 1959-64. He taught & coached at Broadmoor Jr. High,
Broadmoor High, and Baton Rouge High School. Darryl was also an administrator
at McKinley Middle, Sherwood Forrest, and Valley Park. He was employed
by the East Baton Rouge Parish school system for 37 years. Darryl is survived
by this wife Becky Morris Nissen, three sons, Jason Kimball, Wil Morris
and Win Morris; two daughters, Jessica and D’Ann, and three grandchildren,
Chase, Brennan, and Brooke Morris.

the Lions’ 17 signees, nine are from the high school ranks, seven are transfers
from junior college and one is a Division I-A transfer. Of the 17 players,

he led the nation in several offensive categories including passing and
total offense, Lions quarterback Martin Hankins finished seventh in voting
for the Walter Payton Award, which is presented annually by the Sports
Network to I-AA’s top player.

SLU Coaches Memorial Golf Tournament - Santa Maria Golf Club - Baton Rouge,
LA - This year’s tournament is dedicated
to the memory of the late Coach Ned McGhee. Coach McGhee, who served as
athletics trainer, football and golf coach and Athletics Director at Southeastern,
led the Lions to arguably their most successful football campaign ever.
In 1946, Coach McGehee and the Lions finished 9-0 for the first perfect
season in their history and also competed in the Burley Bowl, the only
bowl game in Southeastern history which they won, 21-13. McGehee served
as football coach for five years before taking over as AD and serving admirably
in that position until retiring in1971.

SLU INKS 18 ON NATIONAL SIGNING DAY - The
class, which adds to three transfers signed during the early period who
are currently enrolled at Southeastern, has a Louisiana flavor with 12
hailing from the Bayou State. Six are from Mississippi with Florida (2)
and Texas (1).

Southeastern Louisiana head football coach Hal Mumme announced today two
additions to the Lions football coaching staff. Former LSU defensive
back and Hammond native Carlton Buckels and former Belhaven head coach
Dennis Roland join the Lions staff and will coach the defensive secondary

Southeastern quarterback Seth Babin completed 14 of 17 passes for 191 yards
and two touchdowns and John Gordon went 5-for-8 with a pair of touchdowns
as the White (Offense) team edged the Green (Defense), 35-33, before an
announced crowd of 3,113 Thursday night at Strawberry Stadium.

University football team practiced in full gear Thursday evening for the
first time in nearly 18 years. The team has been practicing in shorts and
t-shirts for about a month now, but for the first time the newly created
squad practiced in full gear at the practice fields on the Southeastern
campus.
