Just one of many TV celebrities that visited Roanoke during the '60s, Merv Griffin waves to crowds on South Jefferson St. during a parade.


Beneath the sheathing on Verizon's building at Luck Avenue & Third Street lies this structure, Roanoke's old C&P Bell Telephone Building.


The lion on the sign in front of George Preas' Red Lion Restaurant on Franklin Road once breathed fire (courtesy of Roanoke Gas). More importantly, they served one of the best submarine sandwiches in town.


At Towers Shopping Center's lower entrance, once stood Roanoke's only Burger Chef. By the time this photo was taken in the late '70s, the chain had failed and the building was now home to the (badly named for the time, Iranian hostage crisis), Persian Palace.


This little building still exists near Roanoke's new Ukrops grocery store on Franklin Road, but you have to look close to see it.
