SOBARS - K6QM

South Bay Amateur Radio Society
c/o Norman Park Center
270 F Street
Chula Vista CA 91910

SOBARS is an active ham radio club with members from San Diego, National City, La Mesa, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, Bonita and San Ysidro, California. Our club callsign, K6QM, honors the memory of longtime SOBARS member John Weiting, who became a Silent Key in 1998.  The logo at the top of this page is that of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the national organization of amateur radio operators, headquartered in Newington, Connecticut.  SOBARS is affiliated with the ARRL.

SOBARS meets the first Thursday of each month at the Norman Park Center, 270 "F" Street in Chula Vista. Meetings start at 7:00 PM and always feature a guest presentation. Refreshments are served at the break and we're out by 9:00, when the center closes. Voting members pay annual dues of $10.00 to support the club's activities, but there is no need to be a member (or even be a ham) to attend the meeting. All are welcome.

We have two "nets" on Tuesday night. We hold a 10-meter net at 1900 (PT) on 28.460 USB.  Then at 1930, we hold a 2m FM voice net is on a local repeater, 146.640 + (107.2 P/L). The control operators do not like you to "kerchunk" the repeater. If you transmit to see whether your radio is working, please ID. Net control is Dick Cupp, K6SJA, for both nets.

FIELD DAY  - OUR ANNUAL EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS DRILL

SOBARS holds Field Day as K6QM. 2007 Field Day was at Olympic View Elementary School in Eastlake, 1220 Greensview Drive, Chula Vista. A national event, Field Day is always the fourth full weekend in June.  Visitors, ham and non-ham alike, are always welcome at Field Day.  For Thomas Guide users, find us on Map 1311, grid G-7.

You're invited to send e-mail to express your interest … or just show up … what the heck!  The red line on this map leads to the school.  Use the driveway at the south end of the school property, as shown.  Setup starts around sunset on the Friday of Field Day Weekend.

Assuming you're driving from downtown Chula Vista, your Eastlake Parkway turnoff is at the intersection with the shopping centers that house Lowes, Target, Kohl's and IHOP.

SOBARS' members are active in ARES, RACES, and the Special Olympics. We conduct monthly Volunteer Examiner sessions in Chula Vista for individuals wishing to obtain or upgrade ham licenses. If you're interested in taking an exam, call SOBARS at 619-424-3837. If you don't get a response, please email SOBARS (see below for email address). To get ready for your test, you may want to attend ham school.  Contact us to find out about classes -- they don't occur on a specific schedule.

SOBARS is affiliated with the ARRL.

OTHER HAM RADIO WEB PAGES

The late Rod Dinkins, AC6V, created and maintained a wonderful ham radio website, ac6v.com.  The website will be maintained in Rod's absence by his son, Jeff.  We remember Rod fondly and we're grateful that his legacy will be preserved.

You can jump to the ARRL's Web Site from here.   ARRL Web Page  Click it! See the Site Index (near the top) for an alphabetical list of the info available. There is a ton!  You can also click and go directly to the ARRL San Diego Section.

SOBARS will gladly establish reciprocal links with other ham radio web sites.  The SOBARS WebMaster welcomes your suggestions for improvement.  Address your comments to us at our email address below.
