The
supplied UNIDEN software is not worth your time. It is almost useless.
I am not going to go into detail about it here. just trust me, or read about
it on the various scanning mail lists. |
 |
"Andy's
Program" (available
here) is shareware and works very well.
The current version is unable to designate frequencies as trunked.
This shortcoming requires you to manually input all trunked frequencies (a
minor pain). Ben Saladino's
Trunk Manager is reported to work for the BC 250D (and BC 785D)
but I cannot vouch for it. I highly
recommend Butel's
ARC 250 software. You can download a demo version to "try before
you buy." The software works better than advertised and you will be
hard pressed to find better customer support. If you want to utilize
software to program your BC 250 or BC 785, stop reading and download the
program now. |
 |
When I
first programmed the scanner, I designated the trunked frequencies as "NFM".
This had a significant impact in that every Talk Group (Digital or
Analog) sounded very muffled and distorted. Programming the trunked
frequencies in "FM" vs. "NFM" cleared this problem. Informal liaison
with other users in the San Diego area indicates that they utilized "NFM"
without any abnormalities. Your mileage may vary. |
 |
Performing the "Sound quality" Adjustment (see page 78 of the user manual)
can make a big difference. |
|
 | Things I like about this scanner:
 |
Digital
monitoring capable! (Nuff said) |
 |
1,000
channels |
 |
Alpha
Numeric labeling per frequency and Talk Group |
 |
Psychedelic orange backlight display (pass the mushrooms) |
|
 | Things I don't like about this
scanner:
 |
100
Channels per bank. Very disappointing - this will leave most users
with a lot of unutilized real estate. 30, 40, or even 50 channels per
bank would be much better. |
 |
When
performing a talk group search, the previously stored text labels DO NOT
display when a known talk group is received. This is a major
shortcoming. I can't understand why UNIDEN didn't include this.
The previous generation trunk tracking scanner was capable of this (BC 780
XLT) |
 |
It's big
sucker (nothing inconspicuous here!) |
 |
The belt
clip. It's a radical departure from UNIDEN's normal plastic clip with
two small screws. This belt clip 'snaps' on the scanner in two
grooves. I am not very confident that it will hold my $600+ toy in place whilst I
carry it about. |
|
 | Summary:
 |
While I
would buy this scanner again, I think UNIDEN could have done a much better
job. I believe their haste to get the scanner on the market first
caused them to release a product that wasn't everything it could be. |
