Field Stripping
Step 1. Unload the firearm.
See Unloading.
Step 2. Remove the reciever cover.
The reciver cover is removed by pressing down on the recoil spring lug
(indicated by yellow circle), found in the rear of the rifle reciever.
Some rifles require that the reciever cover be lifted while the lug is
depressed. On other rifles, the reciever cover will pop off once the
lug
is sufficiently depressed.
Step 3. Remove the recoil spring.
The above picture shows the reciever cover removed from the reciever.
Once the reciever cover is removed, push the recoil spring lug in the
direction of the yellow arrow until the lug is detached from the guides
in the reciever. The recoil spring can then be removed.
Step 4. If the hammer is not cocked, press hammer down.
The hammer may be uncocked if the trigger was pulled after the last
charging action. If the hammer is up (yellow circle), cock it by
pressing down on the hammer (yellow arrow) until the hammer locks into
the trigger group.
Step 5. Remove the bolt carrier.
If the safety lever (blue circle) is in the up position (not shown),
move it to the current shown position to allow for the removal of the
bolt
carrier. Remove the bolt carrier by grabbing onto the charging handle
(yellow
circle) and pulling the entire bolt carrier assembly in the direction
of
the yellow arrow. Pull the bolt carrier all the way back to the rear of
the guide rails on the reciever and lift up. The bolt carrier will
slide
out.
Step 6. Lift up the gas block lever.
The gas block lever (yellow circle above) needs to be released to allow
for the removal of the gas block. Lift the lever in the direction of
the yellow arrow.
While it is possible to lift up the lever by hand, there is a slot (red
circle) in the cleaning kit that will attache to the lever to provide
additional leverage.
The above picture shows the position of the gas block lever in
preparation for removal of the gas block.
Step 7. Remove the gas block.
Once the gas block lever is unlocked, the gas block can be lifted
upwards (yellow arrow) and away from the barrel assembly.
Final Result
This picture shows the rifle in a field stripped state. Additionally,
the bolt below the bolt carrier can be removed. Note that it is
important for the bolt to return to its forward position for assembly.
Further disassembly is possible but will require additional tools.
