Step 1. Remove the magazine.

Magazine in.
Depress the magazine release catch (yellow arrow). While the release catch is depressed, the magazine can be removed in the reverse motion as during magazine insertion.

Step 2. Move safety lever to FIRE position.

In preparation of opening the bolt, flip the safety lever down (green arrow) to the fire position. This will unblock the charging handle.

Step 3. Pull charging handle.

Magazine out.
With one swift motion, pull the charging handle all the way back and hold. This will eject the cartridge in the chamber if it exists. Hint: it is easier to get the cartridge to eject if the ejection port is facing down.

Step 4. Inspect the chamber.

Empty chamber.
Check that a cartridge is still not in the chamber. The yellow circle highlights the chamber which should be empty. If a round persists, either remove the cartridge by hand or repeat step 4. Release the charging handle when done.

The rifle is now unloaded.

Despite the fact, continue to take precautions as if the rifle were still loaded.
