Bayley Street Parkway

Bayley had always been a unique street--it had a railroad running down the middle of it. When the train traffic was diverted from the downtown area to this track, the neighborhood was not pleased that long unit trains would be running through the area. All the  north-south streets from Main St. to the river would be closed and many people were not happy with this idea either.

Realistically, not much could be done to stop the railroad. But the news was not all bad. The rails would be blocked off by a replica wrought iron  fence and landscaped on both sides.  The result is a beautiful parkway extending from St. Francis Avenue, past Lincoln Park and the Firefighters Museum on to the Arkansas River. It is well lighted at night by replica period lamps and has several mini parks along the trail. It connects to the Arkansas River Trail by way of the Lincoln St. Bridge.

The neighborhood now has a well-used and  attractive asset and is learning to live with the trains.
