Smithfield police report

SMITHFIELD -- A driver whose car was halted by the police was so drunk that he was unable to stand, the police said yesterday.

Detectives Dennis J. Paul and Michael McCoy said that when Roland L. Dunbar, 22, of 1 Roosevelt Ave., Johnston, was unable to perform a field sobriety test because he could not stay on his feet, they took him to Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in North Providence for a blood test.

Based on that evidence, they said, they charged Dunbar with driving while under the influence of alcohol.

The officers said they stopped Dunbar's car on Route 295 about 7:35 p.m. Tuesday after several drivers called the police on their cell phones about the driver's eratic behavior.

Dunbar was released pending a Jan. 10 appearance in District Court.
