LEFT:  A. J. Shepherd had started 14th in the race and was running in 11th place by the 50th lap of the 200-lap event.  Don Davis spun on the front straightaway, hit the wall, and lost a wheel.  He leaped from his car (out of the picture to the left) to safety behind the concrete wall.  Three cars passed safely on the outside.  Shepherd tried to pass Davis’ disabled car on the inside but his car spun in front of Jack Turner’s mount.  Turner’s car then rolled end over end.  Shepherd is shown here still sitting in his car (second from left) after that accident.  None of the drivers were injured but all of these cars were out of the race.  Shepherd was credited with having finished in 26th place.  Click your mouse on the picture at left to see another of the spectacular crash that was taken as it was happening – newspaper photo from the A. J. Shepherd collection
