Historical Plaques dedicated by Squibob Chapter of ECV San Diego, California

When I first started this, there were 63 known Squibob plaques, and I had hoped to have the picture taking and GPSing done within about a year. There are now 91 known Squibob plaques

Location - Above Old Town. If you come up Presidio Drive, you will see a large sign just below some steps indicating Fort Stockton Historical Monument. Intersection of Presidio Dr. and north end of Cosoy Way. Up steps on hill (look for the tall flagpole)

Location - Point Loma to Cabrillo National Monument. Take Catalina Blvd. past Electron Ave (final stop light), and you will see an old guard shack in the center of the road. 1.5 miles after the guard shack is a turnoff to the right to the office . Just as you turn into NW Loop Dr., look to your right and you will see the plaque.

Location - Bay Marina Dr. (exit 10) off Hwy. 5 south. Go 2 blocks east - 922 W. 23rd Street. You can't get into the lot to see the plaque except between 12-4 on weekends.

Elizabeth Jane Wimmer
This is a San Diego County plaque - the star represents the approximate location in the county

Location - 1306 N. Harbor Drive. ~~Ask the ticket taker where the plaque is, or go in just after giving your ticket, take the first left, and your first left again. The plaque is not mounted, but is on a holder just off the floor.~~ Update 11.13.07 - The plaque is now mounted just above the ramp on the right.

Location - 1306 W. Harbor Dr. The plaque is on the exterior of the port side of the boat just south (towards the bow) of the gangplank.

Location - Spanish Landing Park opposite the airport on Harbor Drive. Park in the Spanish landing lot off Harbor Drive just opposite terminal 2, follow the sidewalk to about the middle of the park.

Location - Presidio park just above Old Town. Across Presidio Dr. from Junipero Serra Museum next to the parking lot.

Location - Just off Presidio Drive on Taylor Street in front of the restrooms marked "554".

Location - Old Town. Behind 2802 Juan St. at the end of Wallace Street (golf course parking lot)

Location - 10818 San Diego Mission Rd. The plaque is just before the entrance to get tickets to the right on the long wall.

Location - Cabrillo National Monument - Point Loma. Above the parking lot, take the sidewalk to the lighthouse. Just over halfway up on your left you will see the plaque.

Location - Camp Pendleton Marine Base. The plaque is on your left just after entering the driveway to the General's (Base Commander's) Quarters.

Location - Old Town - 2300 block of San Diego Avenue between Arista and Conde Streets.

Location - Carlsbad - take Palomar Airport Road or Rancho Santa Fe Road to Melrose Dr. then go to Carillo Way. Turn west one block to Flying LC Lane. Follow that to the Ranch parking lot, walk down the path to the Ranch House.

Las Flores (San Pedro) Asistencia - CRHL #616

Location - Camp Pendleton Marine Base. Take the Las Pulgas Road exit off Highway 5, go to the base gate. If they let you enter, it is about 0.6 miles till the turn-off on your right (Boy Scout camp). Go into the camp, pass the lot on your left, go in between the two houses, follow the dirt road to near the top of the hill. You will see the remnants on your left. The plaque is off the road in front of the fenced off portion of the remnants.

Location - At present, the plaque is on top of the refrigerator inside the volunteer fire department just before border. Take Hwy. 94 to Hwy 188. On 188, after you pass Humphries Rd., you will see a dirt road turnoff on your right to Tecate Mission. Pull in, and turn left immediately. Just before the small trailer park is the volunteer fire department. If you don't see anyone, look for the office to the trailer area. They have the key.

I spoke extensively with a Park Ranger there, who told me of a journal that was found after the adobes were dedicated. She said that some of the information on the Johnson-Taylor plaque is now known to be incorrect, and that the other plaque at the other end of the preserve that I was looking for was now known as El Cuervo Adobe, not Alvarado Hacienda Adobe, also due to information in a journal that was found after the plaque was placed. Interestingly, the plaque at the other location put up by their department reads "Ruiz-Alvarado Adobe".

Alvarado Hacienda Adobe (now known as El Cuervo Adobe)
This was a Private Plaque - stolen and never replaced. The plaque shown is by the Parks and Recreation Dept.

The stolen plaque (supposedly) read:

RANCHO LOS PEÑASQUITOS
First land grant in San Diego County
to Captain Francisco Maria Ruiz,

    of San Pascual camped here

Location - about the 4500 block of Sorrento Valley Blvd off Sorrento Valley Road. At the end of the parking lot is a horse/bike trail. Take it under the road about a half mile, turn left (south) for a little less than half a mile. The ruins are on your left.

The plaque was stolen sometime shortly after being placed in 1969. This plaque was never recovered, and the ruins have since been renamed, although the park plaque still has the old name.

Location - Imperial County - this private plaque is placed near Stuart Lake boat ramp. The park is just north of Winterhaven then off an 18.2 mile dirt road. Take Hwy 8 to the Winterhaven exit, go through the town, turn left at the first stop sign and you are then on Picacho Road. Follow the road until it veers right (keep going straight, cross the bridge, and follow the signs to the state park), placed April 28, 1979..

Location - From San Diego, take route 15 north to 395 north prior to entering Vacaville. Drive to the 58 freeway (Kramer Junction). Go west on the 58 for 21.8 miles till you hit the 2 lane road turnoff to California City (10 miles). As you approach the town, the road becomes a 4 lane divided highway. When it becomes 2 lanes again, go 0.4 miles to the turnoff to the left. The plaque is located at that turnoff, placed October 14, 2006.
