Historical Site Plaque Listing (Squibob)

Lost Dutchman Gold Route - - a "floating plaque", this un-mounted 100-pound bronze plaque is one of five that were cast that were supposedly to be erected at locations along old US Highway 60-70, starting on a pier at Atlantic or Morehead City, North Carolina, Apache Junction, Arizona, and the Santa Monica pier, the western terminus. The other two locations are unknown. The plaque at Apache Junction is supposedly in place after having been stolen once and then going around the world bolted on a ship. Lost Dutchman Chapter dedicated it on October 25th, 1991 at Superstition Mountain Museum. Ours has been taken to many Clampouts and dedicated many times since 1963, in absence of a permanent plaquing dedication. Note: this is appropriate since most trails in the Southwest can lead to the Lost Dutchman's gold mine, where ever it may be located, because it is still "lost." This is not to be confused with the CRHL #750 Pegleg Smith Monument east of Borrego Springs, where the annual Liars Contest is held.  The plaque is located at Gene Calman's house (XNGH, X-Clampatriarch, and the only surviving active charter member of Squibob Chapter). It was cast in October 1961.

Additional notes:

The following have a period after the E in E Clampus Vitus:
Las Flores Viewpoint, Stagecoach Park, Forster City, Holtville, Imperial Valley Church of the Brethren - Dunkard Church, Datelan/Hyber -Horn

[Let no benighted individual place a period after that fateful “E” (as was done - ignominiously – in a recently celebrated catalogue of California), and let no man of whatever race, color or previous condition succumb to the heretical placing of an “S” after the “P” of CLAMPUS.]

The 736th Tank Battalion plaque at Camp Bouse has us listed as John S Quibob

Imperial Valley Church of the Brethren - Dunkard Church have “Vitas” instead of “Vitus”

The center of Old Town San Diego was once named “Squibob Square” in honor of Lt. Derby. According to Jane Kenealy of the San Diego Historical Society, Squibob Square was ‘a cluster of 17 shops and offices built around a courtyard at San Diego Avenue and Twiggs Street'. It went on to be called 'Dodson's Corner'. I checked with the Old Town Museum and found it behind 2613 San Diego Ave (a Tinsmith). The shops and courtyard are deserted and are in disrepair, and the marker mentioned in the Journal of San Diego History, Spring 1980, Volume 26, Number 2, is now gone. “ The Derby marker in Squibob Square, Old Town, San Diego, states that the proper pronunciation was ‘Skwee-bob’”.
