The Star Aero Club monthly meeting will be
held Wednesday, January 20th at 5:30 PM, at the Deer Valley
Airport restaurant. Come and join us for a drink, snack or dinner, some
fly-in planning, and a little hangar flying.
This month's fly-in is a breakfast outing to Ryan
field at Tucson. We'll meet at the on-field restaurant at 9:00am on
January 30th. Ryan field (RYN) is 103 NM southeast of
DVT, or around 50 minutes for most of us. Note that this event has been
rescheduled a week later than normal to not conflict with the Deer Valley
Pilots Assocation Hospitality Hangar. If you plan to attend the
fly-in, please RSVP to Michael Gibbs.
Calendar
The full 2010 event calendar is available here. News December Outing
December is a busy time with everyone's holiday
schedules, and it is often a challenging time for an Aero Club event.
That proved to be true again this year as no one participated in last
month's planned outing to Ryan field in Tucson. We'll try Ryan field again
as this month's activity.
2010 Event Calendar
The 2010 Aero Club
calendar is taking shape, but we still have room for suggestions.
Please send your event ideas to Michael Gibbs. As described above,
for January we are making another attempt at a breakfast outing to Ryan
field near Tucson. February is the traditional time for our Spot
Landing Contest. This year, we are considering moving the contest to Gila
Bend (E63), rather than Buckeye. Buckeye is getting busy with a lot of
training traffic, and we're thinking Gila Bend may work out
better. For March we are planning an outing to
Ajo for dirt golf.
Paper Airman
Certificates No Longer Valid after March
31st
A little less than two years ago, the FAA announced that it would be replacing all paper airman certificates with plastic certificate that will be much more difficult to counterfeit. The deadline for replacing that certificate is approaching fast. The FAA reminds pilots that they will not be able to exercise flying privileges using an old paper certificate after March 31st, 2010, except for temporary and student pilot certificates. New Restrictions in Luke Alert
Area
The FAA has issued a final airspace rule that
requires two-way radio communication in the vicinity of Luke Air Force
Base effective May
6 . All VFR aircraft operating in the vicinity
will have to establish communication with the Luke Radar Approach Control
prior to entering a Special Air Traffic Rule area and maintain
communication while operating in the area. More information is availableon
the AOPA website . New Run-up Area at
DVT
The northwest ramp at DVT has been repaved and
upgraded to create a new run-up and apron area for runway 7L. It will
open on February 1, 2010. The run-up area will allow completion of all
preflight run-ups and checklists PRIOR to taxiing to Runway 7L for
departure, and should alleviate a back-up on Taxiway A and B causing
delays for aircraft ready to depart. The new run-up area is a controlled movement area, and ACCESS IS CONTROLLED BY THE FAA TOWER on Ground Frequency. You will also have the ability to conduct maintenance run-ups in that area, however, if you need to work on your aircraft, you MUST first cross the non-movement area markings just north and you can work on your aircraft on the adjacent apron area. Remember, to cross into the movement area, you MUST contact Ground on 121.8 to get approval. For more information,
