Wednesday, June 21, 2006Superman Stuff Have you ever met somebody who has more Superman stuff than I do? Well, now you can, if you go to the "Dial B for Blog" website, http://www.dialbforblog.com/ Today's feature, on Superman Collectibles, contains two items I sent him for use in this feature. He used the Supermen of America Certificate, and of course the cheese box. Robby said he would reference me in the post in hopes of more Superman nuts contacting me, but *sigh* perhaps he forgot. Visit B for Blog! It's Silveriffic! --Mark A

This very fun and moving movie is downtown at the musem of art or whatever it's called. But only for less than a week, so hurry! It was viewed last night by the "Triumvirate of Evil who killed Oklahoma City Science-Fiction Fandom" (hereafter referred to as "the Big Toe" (Triumvirate Of Evil). Big Toe enjoyed it very much. Gretchen Moll starts out making you think, "sure, she looks a little like Bettie," but as the flick progresses, she BECOMES the tart teaser. When Gretchen looks over her shoulder, grins, and winks, Big Toe almost believed that Bettie had returned! There's a switch between color and black-and-white footage. The B&W footage, unfortunately, was "grey and white." It didn't contain the deep, rich blacks and high contrast of "old" B&W films. This makes one wonder if the original (color?) footage was converted to B&W digitally. Still, this was an enjoyable movie. On the one side you are marvelling at Moll's portrayal of Bettie as a model having fun dressing up in some very silly outfits. Then you think about it and feel kinda sorry for the consumers of this stuff. Bettie's material seems so tame nowadays that you start to laugh at the concept that such stuff was "forbidden." Although all movies contain fictionalisms, I don't know enough aboutthe real Bettie's life to know if the terrible things shown occurring early in the film ever happened or not. I am very gratified that (at least in the opinion of THIS Toe) the Kefauver "obscenity" hearings were depicted in a straightforward manner. Despite the histrionics, you could believe that these public officials -- some of them, anyway -- were genuinely concerned about this "filthy material" and its decadence. That is, however laughable now, at that time the senators were concerned with decency for its own sake. I'm also gratified that no cheap shots were taken during the scenes involving religious themes. As depicted in this film, Bettie Page indeed has an inner life and thinks about her life and conduct. That was also depicted well. So, if you like movies about pop culture or societal changes or nekkid girls, or are just a fan of cool music (this has a GREAT soundtrack of original and period music), go seek out The Notorious Bettie Page. And watch her dance during the closing credits. When you watch Moll strut and sway and smile, you must admit that, in this movie, Bettie Page has been OWNED. But boy, Moll looked a lot different on that TV show Night Court. Just kidding. Big Toe signing out.
