Press release with info about Soonercon past and future

Hi there, here's a brief summary of what we know so far...
THANKS to all who helped with ideas, hard work, or just paid attendance!

-- Mark

SOONERCON SUCCESS BREAKS FANTASY "DROUGHT" FOR ATTENDEES

SoonerCon 2006, a charity science-fiction/fantasy convention, broke all expectations for attendance, Convention Chair Jerry Wall announced.

The convention, held July 15-16 at the Bricktown Central Plaza, was expected to draw around 200 fans of comic books, movies, TV, and sci-fi/fantasy. "We were thrilled to have more than 500 paid attendees," Wall said. "The higher our attendance, the more funds are raised to make next year's SoonerCon even better."

The higher-than-expected attendance also raised more funds for the Edmond-based charity, Citizens Caring for Children. "It's the practice of many fan-run conventions, besides simply having fun, to also raise money for a charity. This year we had a Charity Auction of various collectibles. These funds, combined with a percentage of the ticket sales, means that SoonerCon, in its first year alone, will be able to make a $1000 donation to Citizens Caring for Children."

Next year's convention is already in the planning stages, barely a week after the first has concluded. Planned activities will include 24-hour video rooms, a dealers' room of all kinds of merchandise, panel discussions, a dance, a costume contest, and something new -- science-fiction karaoke. Wall said, "We had planned all along to make next year's con three days, Friday-Saturday-Sunday. We're already making plans for SoonerCon 2007 to be more fun, involving, and exciting."

Area fans of fantasy, science fiction, and pop culture may keep up-to-date by regularly visiting the convention's website, www.soonercon.com.

"This year was wonderful," Wall exulted, "and we couldn't have done it without the help of individuals and fan clubs in the area. Anybody wishing to volunteer to help plan and execute SoonerCon 2007 is welcome to sign up on our website."

SoonerCon thank-you email

From: Jerry Wall

Thanks to everyone's goodwill, money, hard work, and best wishes, Soonercon 2006 has to be counted as a success!  Although not everything went smoothly all the time, our great bunch of hard workers, great guests, and wonderful attendees made everything SUPER!
We had WELL over 500 paid attendees, and all the bills for the con are already paid.  Soon we'll have a debriefing, where we welcome anyone's input.
We are also going to begin planning on how to make SoonerCon 2007 even BETTER and MORE FUN !
As soon as we have some final numbers, we'll let you know actual attendance, and how much we will be able to donate to our charity, Citizens Caring for Children.
One regret shared by the whole ConComm is the low attendance at the Charity Auction.  More bidders would have raised more money for our Charity!
Remember you can go to www.SoonerCon.com  at any time.  As soon as decisions are made for next year, you'll start seeing updates.
Thanks again to all whose hard work made this FIRST YEAR a GREAT YEAR, with better things to come!
    Talk to you soon,
    Jerry Wall
    Chair, SoonerCon 2006

Soonercon was successful !

Jerry, our con chair, strained some ankle ligaments that were torn long ago, and he's resting with his leg elevated.  Soon he'll send out a note with a general update on how well the con did.
But, we were successful, all bills are paid, and we have some seed money and some money for the Charity.  After all is toted up we'll have some numbers for you.
For my part, thanks to all who helped.  I bet we would love some feedback, and we will need more folks for next year's BIGGER and BETTER SoonerCon 2007!
    Love to all,
    -- Mark Alfred

Tonight's walk-through

We're having a walk-through at the hotel tonight for all the volunteers and gofer people who have graciously volunteered their time.
Anybody else is welcome to come also, out of curiosity or to get a refresher peek at the hotel or to get an advance peek at the Con's layout.
This will be at 6:30 Tuesday night -- tonight.
The hotel, the Bricktown Central Plaza (used to be just the "Central Plaza"), is at Reno & Eastern.
WE WILL START THE MEETING AT THE WAFFLE HOUSE ACROSS THE STREET!!!!!

Once again, the meeting is free & open to all.  You could even still volunteer!  I'm not sure how many hours you need to serve this year to get a comped membership next year (which will be a full THREE DAYS by the way).  Come and ask your questions!

Here's your chance!

Soonercon 2006 is, like, less than two weeks away, like!
Like, enough with the "Likes" already.
We're gonna have a walk-through of the hotel "one last time" this Sunday evening.  We'll meet at the Petro/Golden Skillet (it's called something like that) directly north of the hotel, at 6:30 PM.  So please feel free to join us!
You don't even have to be a volunteer or anything!  Even if you just want to scope out the hotel and find out ahead-of-time where things are gonna be!
